New Mario Vs. Classic Mario: Which Is Better?

New Super Mario Bros. U marks the fourth release in the "New" 2D Mario line. A lot of the editors at Game Informer are looking forward to the launch game, but can't help but wonder how well these four games stack up against the first three titles on the NES and Super Mario World. Senior features editor Matt Helgeson and associate editors Dan Ryckert and Tim Turi sat down to talk about the new game for the Wii U and how it compares to other entries in Mario's long and critically-acclaimed career.

  • Old Mario games were definitely better you can't beat Super Mario 64. (Okay you can but so far they haven't)
  • I like both old and new

  • The new MB games don't live up to the old ones in the slightest. The new ones have a really cheap feel, look, and sound to them.
  • Mod
Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the best Mario game in my opinion. So I'll side with new.
  • classic takes the cake all the way... i hate how floaty everything is now... can't control the characters as well...
  • obviously the classic! super Mario bros. is the greatest game of all time, so no matter how many Mario games they make, they will never come close to super Mario bros.
  • All i remember is how awesome the graphics were when Super Mario came out on the SNES and even SM64. Now i just see a game with dated graphics running on outdated hardware specs. No innovation to me. The Galaxy series was dope though but it should have been in HD. Whatevs.
  • I'm trying to identify what brand of beer each editor is drinking. Blue Moon for Dan?
  • super mario world #1
  • I think the new 2D Mario games are well made, but there's just something that feels right with the old. Super Mario World is the best one, so I compare them all to that.

  • You three bring up some excellent points. Maybe Mario's just gotten stale because Nintendo's using him too much, not because it's lacking innovation. Perhaps they should give Mario, or at least the New series, a breather. And I'll admit, I laughed out loud when Dan said Mario Galaxy 2 was too hard for Matt. Hooray for callback jokes!
  • Classic. Hands down.

  • One way this discussion can be summed up is by the simple fact that the old Mario games had better music. I can't stand the new music compared to the old stuff.
  • Is that good?

  • Classic.

  • Classic Mario. Without a doubt. Super Mario World is a masterpiece, and it's just as fun to play today as it was nearly twenty years ago. That said, however, I would have to say that Super Mario Sunshine is my favorite Mario game.
  • Now I want a beer.

  • I can't believe I just sat through almost 9 minutes of three dudes talking about Mario.
  • I love the awkward endings these videos have. Also... I never noticed that tail on the Mario 3 title screen before... mind is currently blown.
