Delve Into Descent: Second Edition

One of the best tabletop games of the last decade is getting a new edition that adds new characters and monsters, streamlined rules, and a deeper focus on storytelling. Check out our video interview to learn more.

Along with our profile of Fantasy Flight Games, we also have a close look at the company’s big new game. Descent: Journeys in the Dark Second Edition. This new version of the game has just recently become available to the public, and we had two of the game’s designers walk us through some of the big changes coming to the already popular game.

Check out our look at the new game below, and let us know what other tabletop games you’d like to learn more about in the comments below.

For more on Fantasy Flight, be sure to read our feature in the October issue (#234).

  • you do tabletop games now?
  • About the October issue: Why hasn't the cover been revealed yet?
  • Hmm,this looks pretty cool actually, but I dont have that kind of time on my hands.
  • It looks fun, now if only I had 4 more friend to play this with...

  • Nice.

  • I don't play table top games. But I'm sort of interested in games that emulate that feel. Why hasn't anyone made a game that uses AR cards for the 3DS or Vita like this? That way you can have animated little avatars, instead of static statues? That way, you wouldn't need all these props to build dungeons, just lay out cards - this card would be a generic "wall card", another could be a "trap card", and others could be cards for doors or treasure chests, etc.

Make an AR Tabletop game, people. A good AR game could be the next Skylanders, publishers. Gamers rushing out to buy rare booster packs and whatnot. Nab that rare firepit or Dragon boss to complete their custom dungeon, and send it to their friends... It would be awesome.
  • Fantasy Flight rocks, and is a great way to take a break from the video games and play with your buddies. I highly recommend The Lord of the Rings the card game by Fantasy Flight for anyone who loves LOTR/card games and enjoys playing co-op, much like Arkham Horror.

  • Hahaha this is sweet.

  • I'd like to know if there's going to be any new expansions for Last Night on Earth or Invaders From Outer Space. Also, what's up with Battletech? I used to play that game a lot in the 80's and decided to play it with my friends a few weeks ago. I went online to see what I'd missed in the last 15+ years since I last followed the game and it's now run by a different company and has a more casual feel to it that can be made more complex if players want to do that. Still a cool game though.
  • Miller, I think a tabletop report is a great thing!  I checked out both vid's and really enjoyed the Descent closer look.  I myself have played quite a few tabletop games, from RPG's to Cardboard Counter War games.  Maybe you could do a feature on the upcoming release of Dungeon! from WoTC.  That is a remake of the 70's version that I played extensively when I was a kid.  I also recently picked up Muchkin, which is a nice card game suitable to kids.  Keep up the great work!

  • The first edition of Descent is way better than 2nd edition. And it is NOT one of the best in the past decade. You guys are starting to smoke some serious drugs. 1st edition came out at the same price point as 2nd. with 3 times as much in the box. And much better sculpts for the figures. If you want one of the best games to come out I can list a few hundred that are better than the steaming pile of crap that second edition is.
  • If you are doing tabletop games now, any chance you'll cover Warhammer 40K?
  • Well, now I'm certain of it.  GI is featuring every tabletop company BUT Wizkids.  That's cool, I guess...

  • AHHHH I need this game! Too bad board games are so expensive.
  • Seems like a good way to kick it with friends when your power goes out.

  • I want!!!
