Test Chamber – The Last Story

The Last Story, the latest game from Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, comes out on August 14. This Japanese role-playing game features a unique action-focus battle system, and a classic fantasy tale involving warring nations, giant monsters, and androgynous dudes. Joe Juba and Dan Ryckert joined me for a look at The Last Story's opening sequence. See how long it takes before the main character is walking around in his underwear!

  • I love Test Chamber.
  • Ryckert for President!
  • My guess is 15 hours before the protagonist is in his undies. I'm just gonna guess his clothes are going to be kicked off.
OK so I was wrong. Still the game looks pretty fun, looking forward to the review.
  • Joe is the best! (Sorry, Reiner.)
  • There NEEDS to be a "Best of Dan Ryckert" DVD/Blu-ray or a Dan Ryckert videogame. Preferably "Air Force Gator".
  • I liked the outfits a lot, they look great on girls.

    Great Test Chamber, guys.

  • Can't wait for this.
    Hey wow, first double post...
    Now deleted.
  • Great Test Chamber. This game looks like it could be pretty good. I might have to pick it up at some point.

  • Dang, weak graphics and the controls seem to be hit or miss. I also don't see the point of a "cover" element in an RPG that focuses on melee combat.
  • I like when there are new test chambers... but what is with these guys and the androgynous weirdos? And the half-naked characters? And what's with RPGs and bad Brit accents? It looks a lot like the last action-RPG to me. Also BOOM SHE GONE But it does have an angsty dead parent moment, that's how you know it's an RPG.
  • It's pretty good. I've finished it. But xenoblade is much better.

  • This looks sweet, too bad it's on a console I don't own.

  • Got this pre ordered, really looking forward to playing this, so going to skip this video.
  • This was great.

  • Well, I'll be heading to youtube to watch this. Thanks for uploading it there, GI! I'm really glad you guys are taking a look at this this. I dug Xenoblade, for awhile, but once I started seeing footage of Last Story, I got pretty cold on Xenoblade and just wanted to play this. This, the last game I'll play for my Wii (though I'll give my wii to my sister after Last Story, and SHE'LL play one more big game for it: Epic Mickey 2. I'll be playing the PS3 version)

By the way, TECHNICALLY, Last Story was developed by AQ Interactive, no? Mistwalker is a design-firm; besides that iOS surfing game Sakaguchi ("the 'Gooch") just did, they don't program anything themselves. They come up with scenario, script, dialogue, character and world designs, then they find an actual studio to do the production. The actual programming and art is done by someone else. Lost Odyssey was done by Feelplus, for example, while Artoon did Blue Dragoon (while the DS Blue Dragons were done by Tri-Crescendo).

I don't know how widely adopted this model is. I know Sora operates like that in Japan, which is why Sakurai is still credited as design lead on Smash Brothers Wii U despite Namco actually developing it. And here in the west, ex-Retro Studios guys formed Armature Studios to do work that way...but they haven't done ANYTHING yet, so who knows how successful it is. I'm just pointing it out because, frankly, Mistwalker confused me for a long time. I really wondered what they did, because I KNEW other developers did the games they were credited for. All I knew was publishers and developers - and I think I'm not the only gamer out there who understands that.

And that DS RPG you couldn't remember? It was called, "A.S.H: Archaic Sealed Heat", and yup, it didn't even come out here.
  • Pretty bad ass

  • The Wii needs another good RPG. This one seems to fit the bill...

  • Sounds cool, now I need a dictionary for the word "androgynous".
  • The game in Operation Rainfall that isn't coming here is Pandora's Tower. Just thought you should know.
