Discussing The Castlevania: Lords Of Shadow Trilogy

MercurySteam didn't just create the first worthwhile 3D Castlevania game with 2010's Lords of Shadow, they started a whole trilogy. With the 3DS's Mirror of Fate and Lords of Shadow 2 on the spooky, moonlit horizon, Matt Miller and I discuss the trilogy and the future of the franchise.

In the video below, I take advantage of the fact that Miller just recently finished Lords of Shadow, pulling him into a conversation about the series' future, what it might be like to play as Dracula, and more.

  • I hope I can get into these Castlevania games sometime soon. But Lords of Shadow really didn't do it for me. Still, looking forward to the 3DS version.
  • I did the same exact thing as Matt. Played a couple hours, went meh, then came back this year. Good thing I did, because it's easily one of my favorite games that I've played this year. Cannot wait to see what they do with 2 after laying such a solid foundation. I also bought a 3DS in anticipation of a 2D Castlevania eventually. Even though it's not of Order of Ecclesia 2, I'll be buying it on day one.
  • I'm so excited for Lords of Shadow 2.
  • The CG trailer for LoS 2 was incredible!

  • Loved the first one, it was one of those games where you had to go back and play the game again to unlock everything and as time went on, you discovered new uses for your items. Incredibly deep combat system. Can't wait for 2, wish there was a different subtitle though.
  • I'm a little confused... is the trilogy LoS, Mirror of Fate and LoS2? Because I was a big fan of the first LoS, but I'm not going to go out and buy a 3DS just for this...
  • ;o;;

  • I really can't wait for the Lord of Shadows 2 game. I really like this re-imagining of Castlevania. I wish more series would seriously consider reboots. Also was that a guest appearance by Ben Reeves?
  • LoS is one of my favorite games of this generation. Good conversation, and nice to glimpse Ben "working" in the background.

  • I had a lot of issues with Lords of Shadow but one thing was amazing, the soundtrack, I loved it!

  • Very interesting thoughts.

  • lords of shadow was awesome i can't wait for mirror of fate and lords of shadow 2

  • I really liked Lords of Shadow and by the end was dying for more but I'll admit, it was a hard game to really get into at first. The first level and boss fight were fun but the levels after that started to really slow down. They looked great, but gameplay-wise I was forcing myself to continue. Having beaten it though, I'm eager as hell for Lords of Shadow 2.

  • What kind of trilogy that can be all things awesome has its second part on a handheld? I have an XBox and played the first game on an XBox. I should be able to play the next TWO parts on an XBox. Who comes up with these ideas anyway? Are there really that many hardcore gamers who play on handheld devices? The only people I see playing them are kids...
  • Just finished and loved the first one, despite the slow start. cant wait for either of these followups.

  • More " Discussion " videos, por favor.

  • Yeah. I'm quite psyched for LoS2. I have to agree with the genreal consensus that LoS has a slow opening. It's just around heading for the second Lord does it really start to click. The tale is sweet, the character designs and mythos that sets up the universe is impressive, and the combat uses the nuances of the mythos to make fun battles. Just the sense of moving around a continent to vastly different areas for each Lord helps keep the experience fresh.

Upon beating it again to play the DLC (sad to say it was a disappointment) I am re-pumped to go back to that universe and see where it is all heading.
  • I'd just like to point out how giddy I was to hear "Wood Carving Partitia", the theme to the Long Library from SotN, being played for this discussion. Symphony of the Night is my favorite game. Bravo, gentlemen.

  • LOS is a slow burn but by the 15th hour or so you can't believe how good it is.

  • I love the Castlevania games with a passion. Lords of Shadow was amazing, so sign me up for the sequel. I'm game.
