Moments: Samus Aran And Link Appearing In Super Mario RPG

Often, the memories of our favorite video games can be distilled to one specific moment. In our new recurring 'Moments' feature, we're going to discuss some of our favorites.

When Samus Aran and Link showed up in Super Mario RPG, it was mind blowing. Despite Mario, Link, and Samus all being Nintendo characters, the three had never interacted with one another. These days, Mario, Link, and Samus are a couple of chums with Super Smash Bros., but before then, this was the only place you could see these Nintendo mascots hanging out in the same room.

Both cameos are of the characters in bed resting. Interacting with sleeping Link activated a familiar Zelda tune, and Samus talks in her sleep about Mother Brain. Cameos are pretty common these days with characters from games appearing in entirely different franchises as unlockables or special DLC, but back in 1996, we couldn't believe what was happening.

  • Hmmm... I never noticed them and I've played the game 2-3 times. But then again, I was never a big Zelda or Metroid fan.

  • fun fun

  • I remember really being excited when I saw Link the first time in Rose Town. I never actually saw Samus. Another great moment was the 2D Mario curtain in Booster's Tower...

  • I've GOT to play through Super Mario RPG again. What an awesome game. So full of secrets and little goodies.

Another outside-franchise nod was the Final Fantasy-style fight against optional super-boss Culex. He wasn't actually a Final Fantasy character, but he looked like he could be, and his battle music was the boss theme from FFIV.

  • Meh, it really wasn't that BIG to me. It was a nice surprise back then, but not a mind-blowing one. Well, to me at least. That game was great, though.

  • Old line color Mario game see

  • I love cameos and easter eggs thats why i particularly love the Arkham and MGS games....they are the best at this now-a-days

  • I really need to play through this some day.

  • I don't understand why we are talking about this.

  • That was pretty sweet. It's always cool seeing little things like that in games. I love it.

  • Its been fifteen years and Nintendo and Square still haven't gotten back together to make a REAL Super Mario RPG 2...

  • Great idea for a feature! Thanks for bringin back some memories here. Much appeciated!

A few of my own memories:

    1) The first time I saw Mortal Kombat in a magazine. I couldn't believe that it was a video game. It looked almost eerily real. Raiden fighting Sub Zero. I found an arcade that had it nearby and thus, the unhealthy obsession with my favorite gaming series began.

    2) Opening my shiny new Dreamcast and popping in Soul Calibur for the first time. The graphics absolutely blew me away. This to me felt like the dividing line between the games of the past and what the future held. I was completely amazed and couldn't stop playing.

    3) Every single background story from Kaim's life in Lost Odyssey. They were all unique and memorable in their own right. I never would've thought that something like this would work in a video game, but somehow, just telling me a small story like that every now and then really worked and added tons of depth to the main character.

    4) The firt time a spider falls from the ceiling in Resident Evil. It was really the first time I'd ever jumped out of my seat while playing a game. A few other games since then (Silent Hill especially), but giant spider plus tank controls equals scary!

    5) Getting Knights of the Round in Final Fantasy VII. Sure, I had to cheat by looking up how to breed the chocobos (who didn't?) but once I got it, I was amazed. It felt like a 10 minute summon. I actually didn't want to use it because of how long it took.

    Okay, last one:

    6) The opening cinematic in Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver. Sure, it's a bit hamfisted by today's standards, but I was mesmorized by it back then. I'd never seen such a rich, dramatic story play out for me like that in a game before. Phenomenal voice acting matched with fun gameplay and smart puzzles. Every game in this series, including the original Blood Omen sucked me in and I loved every minute of it. But that first cinematic in Soul Reaver told me right away that this was a series I had to see through to the end. Now if only we could get another game...
  • Awesome, I remember hearing about this, but I don't remember Link...cool!

  • one of my favorite, no probably my favorite game of all time! :D i love it.

  • even though its really basic, this is one of the best rpg's of all time. i wish there would've been a direct sequel; paper mario is good, but the original thought of teaming mario, bowser, and peach together was very creative. im suprised nintendo won't port this over to the 3ds. i think it'd do really good.

  • Is this game available on the Nintendo E Shop for the 3DS?

  • I had multiple play sessions through this game and never noticed these...

  • Never found either of those guys in Mario RPG, but I have heard about them. You guys should do the Final Fantasy Boss that also appears in that game. www.youtube.com/watch

  • Don't forget the Blue Falcon & Fire Stingray (F-zero) and Arwing (Star Fox) in the Barrel Volcano shop. My little bro was the one who brought my attention to those cameos. And don't forget Monstro Town's hidden boss: Culex from Final Fantasy IV

edit: Wait, one of the comments says Culex wasn't actually in FF4. Is that right?
  • Yeah this is pretty cool but why bring it up now?
