Battlefield 3: Close Quarters Impressions

It’s no secret that EA wants Battlefield to dethrone Call of Duty as the most popular (and profitable) military shooter game. Before Battlefield 3 launched late last year, EA CEO John Riccitiello even quipped that it was “designed to take that game down.” Though it didn’t come close to beating Modern Warfare 3’s astronomical sales figures, Battlefield 3 grew its share of the market considerably thanks to the world-class Frostbite 2 engine, varied map designs, and unique tactical multiplayer that stresses teamwork over lone wolf running and gunning.

In an attempt to woo the Call of Duty faithful and further expand its base, DICE is essentially releasing a Call of Duty map pack as the second Battlefield 3 expansion. Close Quarters has four smaller maps, smaller team sizes, and no vehicles. DICE even tweaked its traditional flag-capping Conquest mode to include random respawn locations and dubbed it “Conquest Domination” to drive the message home for COD fans. Not exactly subtle.

Close Quarters preserves the squad- and class-based structure of the base game, but this is strictly a formality. Many of the class skills are negated by the very nature of these gunfights. You rarely need ammunition boxes because most people don’t live long enough to exhaust their original allotment, the recon class has no purpose in these cramped spaces, and engineers may as well leave their AT-mines and repair tools behind.

The majority of the 16-player Conquest Domination matches I played were chaotic free-for-alls where soldiers raced from flag to flag with abandon, shooting anyone or anything that moves. Teamkill counts were high on Hardcore mode, team tactics were scarce, getting shot in the back was the most common way to die, and many matches were undermined by players spamming claymore mines, rockets, M320 rounds, and C4 in the cramped spaces.

Outside of Conquest Domination, Close Quarters supports the standard team deathmatch, squad deathmatch, and a new mode called Gun Master (think Counter-Strike’s Gun Game) that tasks you with racking up kills to improve your weaponry. Every two kills nets you a more powerful weapon, and a winner is declared once a player reaches the 17th level and becomes the first person to kill an enemy with a knife. The mode awkwardly retains a team structure, though it makes no sense in this context where only one person can be named the winner. If you’d rather play Conquest or Rush, you’re out of luck. None of these new maps support the two most popular Battlefield modes.

With no open spaces to worry about, DICE turned up the destructibility to 11. Bullets rip apart everything in these maps, which include a luxurious high-rise apartment, a multi-level office building, an abandoned Middle Eastern estate, and a vertical industrial complex. The maps are much smaller than the traditional Battlefield maps, but I question why DICE dropped the player count down to 16. Several times I found myself wandering these complexes looking for someone to shoot; adding a few more people might have preserved the high-octane feel of the gunfights they were clearly striving for.

Fans who enjoy concentrated maps and traditional shooter experiences may find something to like about Close Quarters, but if I’m hungry for frantic, lone wolf gameplay I’ll stick the more fast-paced, 60-frames-per-second experience of Call of Duty. When my friends and I pop in Battlefield 3, we’ll ignore Close Quarters and opt for a customized rotation of Rush and Conquest maps that feature more soldiers and vehicles. You know, Battlefield.

  • Im considering on buying BF Premium but Ill wait too see if Armored Kill is any good(on consoles) before I decide on buying it
  • It's chaotic to say the least, but I find the new maps to be really fun. If I want the traditional BF experience, I'll play the original maps. When I'm in the mood for fast frantic action, I'll jump on the new Close Quarters maps. Best of both worlds packed into one FPS.
  • 10 bucks says the writer played this on Xbox or PS3. On PC Close Quarters is pretty fun, you don't have the problem of being limited to 16 players, I can play on any size server most common being 32 player sizes. The 32 player servers are far more hectic than a 16 player server but it feels more like BF3 on a 16 player server (This is cause you have time to breath).
  • Not paying 15 dollars for this. Sounds too much like COD.
  • It did not sound appealing from the start. They should have done it more like Call of Duty where they release a variety of map sizes versus all small-scaled maps.
  • It's not horrible. Not particularly my style, but it's fun every once in a while.
  • So this just reinforces my own personal feelings and why I won't spend money on this map pack. Why does everything have to be CoD now? Why can't games just be what they are meant to be?
  • Recon has no use? You obviously are only thinking of recon as a sniper. I earn around 2,000 extra experience every match from using the T-UGS motion sensor. Using this to spot the enemy in such tight corridors is a huge bonus to the team. Drop the 12X zoom bolt action rifles and pick up a shotgun or smg.

Oh and I forgot, recon also gets spawn beacon. Help your squad by giving them a non random spawn point. Maybe even try to mount a defensive and secure a part of the map for the enemy to enter your kill zone.
  • Is this review based on the console version of BF3?
  • i actually think close quarters looks pretty good, imo people need to get over CoD and stop comparing EVERYTHING to it, it's kinda pathetic.
  • Sounds like Battlfield is a CoD wanna be
  • Amen. Battlefield needs to drive home its strengths with DLC. More vehicles, guns, skins, and more importantly more large maps. I am looking forward to Armor Kill though and I will almost certainly get that one. I just love blowing up vehicles.
  • I really like the new maps they are defiantly a breath of fresh air. And if nothing else get this map pack for the new guns.  The map pack has some of the best guns of the entire game.  cough cough AUG AND M417

  • Well, I wont necessarily agree with the article. I play a lot of squad Deathmatch and squad rush. Theses maps and weapons go great with these game modes. Also, CoD has nothing new from Infinity Wards side. Close Quarters is great and it obviously offers more than two of CoD DLC's. Plus, Premium is worth getting and if you get it you get this map so of course you should download if you got premium. Really fun game. Conquest and Rush arent the only game modes that make Battlefield what it is. I own both games and I have to admit, Battlefield has offered more than MW3. Not to mention that even if it doesn't run at 60, Battlefield is not a slow paced game. Just because you dont spawn and have to kill right away does not make it a slow paced game. Though, on squad games if you spawn on a teammate you might just have to do that in Battlefield.

  • This whole mimicking Call of Duty thing is really making me mad. The Battlefield franchise has always stressed teamwork and tactics over run and gun gameplay, and this map pack (along with a lot of things in the base game, such as mcoms being two inches away from each other) really negates the whole Battlefield experience for me. If I wanted to do the "die and respawn every two seconds" tango, i'd play call of duty. The gameplay on these maps also suffers from a design standpoint, as 30 fps and far from perfect hit detection are not things you want to combine with face to face gunfights. For me, Battlefield is about mid range engagements and out-thinking the enemy team, that's the bread and butter. This expansion just makes me feel like EA is holding a gun to DICE's head and robbing the series of its identity.
  • i am going to say this, all of the close quarter maps are bigger than operation metro
  • I'm not a big fan of this map pack, so thankfully I have three more expansions awaiting in the future.

All I've seen so far is people spamming auto shotguns, M320s, and RPGs constantly. With the smaller map size, these are even more annoying than in the regular game / B2K. Not to mention I go at least a minute before finding someone with the smaller team size. I think 24 people (I play console) would have been perfect for it.

But Gun Master is a fairly fun game mode, as I've always been a big fan of Gun Games. So this will keep me going for now.
  • Its fun, but the bugs and issues shine much brighter. Hit detection is more finicky then ever, stuttering is frequent, and anything more then 24 players is a mess, while too few and it still feels like I'm running around looking for people. Its not bad, but its not good and really misses the point of BF, especially in removing the two best modes.
  • I really hope luring in the COD fans doesn't work cause I don't want a whole bunch of annoying 12 year olds running around the battlefield
  • I don't understand why people bought premium,I mean how stupid is it to buy something you know nothing about (EndGame,Aftermath) For all you premium players know. Endgame can just be a giant Dick labeled "EA" showing a pic of your gold knifed soldier labeled 'DICE' being shot
