The lights are on
With every hardware generation, console manufacturers and game developers try their hardest to wow gamers with demos designed to show off raw potential (and why people should crack open their wallets). It's not exactly news that games look better than they ever have before, either, particularly now that we're on the cusp of a new hardware generation. You can expect to see even more glimpses of the future over the next year or so, in a similar vein to what Epic Games and Square Enix have recently unveiled. We've compiled some of our favorite demos from the past few years; think of these as both reminders of how much visual progress the industry has made, and also a way to put current graphical advances in perspective.

I think the PS3 tech demos accurately displayed the abilities of the system. Games today look just like those tech demos, or even better.
Ahh a new generation. It's amazing to know that the PC is always "known". Yes, total fanboyism with the PS3 and 360 I own and so cherish.-_- By "known", I mean that you always know what to do with it and whats coming out compared to consoles..Were all still waiting on the new console information! I have just built a new PC in light of Unreal 4..Awesome! "Cool story bro!" "I tell it at parties!"
The demos have gotten better and they are going to keep getting better. I enjoyed looking at these.
throwback, hardcore. I love all of these
That Kara Demo is intense.
Glad to see that you guys put tech demos in the limelight :D
If memory serves me right, the Samaritan demo was the real deal. They use some trickery, but nothing that wouldn't be available to any developer making a real-time game with it.
Just like the new trailer from Square-Enix, it is very possible to render a full game in that quality, but the production costs would have been extremely high. I guess that can be said for most tech demos now I think about it :D
:)
Damn Quantic dreams... you continue to astound me. Only a tech demo yet it really drew me in.
The evolution of games, man. It's crazy... can't even begin to think what we'll be capable of in 5 years.
I don't care if it is a tech demo, there needs to a be a Samaritan game.
dam i remember that Killzone 2 footage and how it looked so REAL...funny how time changes all that.
Very interesting.
I remember all of these. I still like that Zelda footage, oddly enough. I also loved the Half-Life 2 physics demo.
It's amazing to see how fast and far the technology has moved in the 12 or so years from when these tech demos were released :)
Interesting.
I still want a game based on Samaritan.
That is not a hummingbird...
