Cliff Bleszinski Explains The Next Generation Of Games

While on our cover trip for Gears of War: Judgment we sat down with design director Cliff Bleszinski to talk about the power of Unreal Engine 4. Built for the next generation of consoles and high-end PCs, Epic Games is hoping that its next engine will be as widespread in the game development scene as Unreal Engine 3. So what does Unreal Engine 4 mean for developers and gamers alike? Watch the video below to see behind-the-scenes footage of the new engine, hear Cliff explain what it is capable of, and even drop a hint or two about the direction he would like to steer the engine with his future projects.

  • Niiiiiiiiiiiice

  • the future is going to be awesome. i cant wait for this.

  • I hope we can see a game use this engine soon!!

  • this looks pretty good but , it isn't that impresive...i mean it isn't realistic, i like the particle effect but if you played the first crysis, there is a mod which introduces thousands of particles in the game that looks as good as this ones....and cryengine 3 or redengine(witcher2) already look this good..!!!

  • imagine what something like skyrim or mass effect would look like on this engine. between this and square enix's luminous engine nex-gen games are going to be mind-blowing!

  • *sniff* *sniff* it's so beautiful

  • It looks tasty.

  • I just want to watch this video without listening to this deuschbag talk.

  • Hopefully Epic gets Sony and Microsoft to beef up the hardware to what's necessary. They did it when showing Gears of War last time around so I have faith. I'd rather pay an extra $100 or so to keep the consoles from being outdated again in a couple years. His last point about working smarter is spot on. Teams blowing up even higher will stint creativity and risks and even more.
  • PS4 must have this, and elder scrolls 6 must use this!!!!!!! that would be sick!!!

  • Very interesting.. There was a Youtube video a while back of someone claiming to have an engine capable of unlimited real-time rendering in the works. However I believe it most likely would still be way off from being a viable option in development of games if it were true.
  • Will enemies still be a dumb as a brick? Probably, they'll just look good doing it. Personally I couldn't careless if developers adopted this or stuck to UE3, Frostbite etc. I'm not likely to be wowed by brown with more particle effects.
  • I believe Kismet is the most important thing about Unreal 4.  Despite all the implications for gameplay and even simple stop and stare moments, Kismet should be able to speed up and simplify the development process, even allowing them, like how Cliff Bleszinski says, to experiment without impeding the performance of the other members of the team.

Dev. time is an element that is damaging the industry, as a longer dev. cycle implies bigger costs and also that case of letting a game be in the works for too long and coming out irrelevant & backward.  So lightening that load for developers will help the entire production process as a whole.

  • It makes me wonder if i should buy the next-gen consoles immediately or make my 360 and Ps3 reach their limits first

  • Looks very promising

  • Even though I don't like a lot of his games, I still love how he always is for the industry pushing it forward.

  • What does Cliff knows,he only make epic game! Sorry i just had to tell a corny joke.

  • Judging from the comments his shirt was a smart move.

  • that was really really great, both the interview and the video
