E3 Predictions: MS And Sony Talk Next-Gen Consoles

Both Microsoft and Sony have stated they won't debut new consoles at this year's E3, but we still expect to hear some next-gen talk during the show.

The Internet kicked off 2012 with rumors that both Microsoft and Sony would be outlining their next-gen plans at this year's E3. A few days later, Sony's Kaz Hirai denied the rumor, stating the company is "not making any [next-gen console] announcements at E3" and that it will be sticking to its planned 10-year cycle for the PS3. In mid-March, Microsoft Studios' Group PR Manager Ryan James told us there will be "no talk of new Xbox hardware at E3 or anytime soon."

Given how definitive these statements are, we would be surprised to see any kind of next-gen hardware from Sony or MS at E3. But that doesn't mean both companies won't start laying the groundwork for a new generation of consoles, in the vaguest and most boastful ways possible. Sony's press conference invitation promises "the future of gameplay and innovation," stating the company will share more about "the new PlayStation lineup, products, and services that will drive the upcoming year in entertainment." We expect some of that talk to bleed into next-gen talk, even if it's not explicitly labeled as such.

Epic Games has also recently started talking up Unreal Engine 4, which will play a major role in the development of next-gen titles, and there's no better place to show it off to the public than the industry's largest show. We're guessing Microsoft and Sony will be vying to include Epic in their respective press conferences, as a way to bolster their position in the mindshare of the gaming public.

Epic isn't the only developer working on next-gen software. EA, Square-Enix, Dice, and countless other studios have announced they're working on next-gen software and games. The recent leak out of Bungie reveals that the first title in the company's new "Destiny" series may be released on both Xbox 360 and its successor. With so many studios working on next-gen projects, we expect to see or hear about at least some games that are being developed for "unspecified future consoles," which may give us our first glimpse of  next-gen gaming whether Microsoft and Sony are ready to discuss it or not.

That, or Microsoft and Sony could leave all talk of the next generation of consoles to Nintendo again, which will undoubtedly have more Wii U games to show off. Not exactly the business plan we would opt for, but what do we know...

  • They will probably tease us with pics and tech that the new console with hold but not a full list of things. They might just say what we can expect to see next year and give us a taste of games to expect to see on the new console like they did with the WiiU, Hope that the ps3 controllers are more durable and by that I mean the sticks they wear down to easily and stop responding when you click it in after a wile. One year of playing COD your sticks are ***, costantly running, the outer rim of the sticks start cuting into them so lets hope they fix this with the new console. I know E3 will be great and I can't wait.
  • I'm glad a full reveal won't be happening. I am not ready for the next-gen consoles yet.

  • I'd rather see game developers making better use of consoles as they stand - there are still plenty of games getting made that look fantastic on the current-gen.

  • sony and microsoft have clearly stated that there is going to be no new console talk at this years e3 2012 so why don't you just let it be.

everybody thinks they know but they don't.The only people who know are sony and microsoft and both have said "NO NEW CONSOLES THIS YEAR OR ANYTIME SOON" take it at face value.also the guy complaineing about kinect it is not a bad device and so what if thay add more app and intrograte kinect in to more games i happen to like kinect i 2 xbox 360s and 2 kinects and i enjoy them. But if you do like it don't dis it eather. And if you never tryed it dont knock it.
  • Yes I know they have both said no new console reveal, and to be honest I'm not expecting one. However, I live in hope that they will just go "tadaa" at the end and show them.

I just want a new console **BRAAAHHHH**.

  • I really can't wait for the next gen consoles to arrive, then gaming can get another leap forward. And before someone says the graphics are good enough already, just stop.
  • im good take another ten if you like sony, people forget the replay value of games, so many games out there i havent even begun

    dude trust.

  • So long as the PS3 still has a few years left I'm ok for a while. If I remember right when that came out it was around $600 or $800(can't remember, but it was expensive). I'm not about to pay the better part of $1,000 for a new console when the one I got is just fine.
  • I am happy about that because then they would move their focus to that.

  • I don't want a Marchiafava, I want a *** liter of cola!

  • With so many company's talking about working on next gen products i can see them letting lose something or else as said leave it to nintendo and giving them 2 years to show off their next console without word on yours is not a good thing.

  • I don't expect anything from them on next gen hardware. Don't think I'm ready for new consoles just yet anyway. As for Nintendo, I'm glad they're releasing the Wii U this year. I think it's about time they caught up.

  • I don't think its going to happen but will see.

  • Wii U: the beginning of Nintendo's biggest mistake.  This console directly challenges sony and microsoft.  Many games will play similarly on the Wii U as on the PS or Xbox, who will pick the Wii U over the other two?

  • Still waiting on a zunebox:)

  • no... did you know they still release a few new games for ps2..... if ps2 life is still going. and ps3 is just now hitting it's peak in sales. why would they come out with a new system.

i mean it's not like the wiiu is gonna intimidate them into releasing one>>>

  • Nobody will ever know what they are going to say about next-gen gaming until E3.  Everything is just rumors.

  • NOOOO!!!!!!!!!! i don't want new consoles!!!! i'm still in love with the old ones!!!!!!!

  • I'm not ready for new consoles.

  • PS3 still is wonderful no matter what happens.
