E3 Predictions: MS And Sony Talk Next-Gen Consoles

Both Microsoft and Sony have stated they won't debut new consoles at this year's E3, but we still expect to hear some next-gen talk during the show.

The Internet kicked off 2012 with rumors that both Microsoft and Sony would be outlining their next-gen plans at this year's E3. A few days later, Sony's Kaz Hirai denied the rumor, stating the company is "not making any [next-gen console] announcements at E3" and that it will be sticking to its planned 10-year cycle for the PS3. In mid-March, Microsoft Studios' Group PR Manager Ryan James told us there will be "no talk of new Xbox hardware at E3 or anytime soon."

Given how definitive these statements are, we would be surprised to see any kind of next-gen hardware from Sony or MS at E3. But that doesn't mean both companies won't start laying the groundwork for a new generation of consoles, in the vaguest and most boastful ways possible. Sony's press conference invitation promises "the future of gameplay and innovation," stating the company will share more about "the new PlayStation lineup, products, and services that will drive the upcoming year in entertainment." We expect some of that talk to bleed into next-gen talk, even if it's not explicitly labeled as such.

Epic Games has also recently started talking up Unreal Engine 4, which will play a major role in the development of next-gen titles, and there's no better place to show it off to the public than the industry's largest show. We're guessing Microsoft and Sony will be vying to include Epic in their respective press conferences, as a way to bolster their position in the mindshare of the gaming public.

Epic isn't the only developer working on next-gen software. EA, Square-Enix, Dice, and countless other studios have announced they're working on next-gen software and games. The recent leak out of Bungie reveals that the first title in the company's new "Destiny" series may be released on both Xbox 360 and its successor. With so many studios working on next-gen projects, we expect to see or hear about at least some games that are being developed for "unspecified future consoles," which may give us our first glimpse of  next-gen gaming whether Microsoft and Sony are ready to discuss it or not.

That, or Microsoft and Sony could leave all talk of the next generation of consoles to Nintendo again, which will undoubtedly have more Wii U games to show off. Not exactly the business plan we would opt for, but what do we know...

  • If not a full reveal we will probably be seeing tech demos. But I would bet on at least a timetable or reveal for both Sony and MS.

  • I don't know if I'm truly ready for a PS4. Then again, it kind of is exciting.
  • NEXT GEN CONSOLES, PLEASE! no move/kinect BS, Sony and MS. Still not sure it will happen, though. I'm about 50/50 right now on whether or not we will see new consoles :/ The fact that we haven't heard any leaked news about what sort of hardware will be included in them is a bad sign, too. Even the wii u had some leaked news about the screen controller about a month before e3 last year.
  • I'm hoping there won't be any talk of the next gen consoles for E3 this year (aside from Wii U of course, which better be awesome). In both Nintendo's and Sony's case I hope they spend a significant amount of time outlining the future for both of their new handhelds. I love both the 3DS and Vita, but there are really only a few big games on the horizon for either console. In the Vita's case, there is just a lot of ports ahead which isn't awful but I want original games too.
  • My guess is that nintendo altered the wiiu to be more powerful than what was shown. If only to be able to run samaritan or a scaled back version of ue4. That and iriginal titles. Also ms and sony will have closed door conferences with devs pimping out their devkits and the oublic will get "leaked" pics of them.

  • I doubt we'll see much this year, with the amount of games releasing around Fall and Spring. What we might see is some talk of the tech, and perhaps the larger questions and rumors answered.

I don't think we'll see anything next-gen from MS or Sony. Even if we at least get some talk out of them about it, it won't be much outside of "what we want to do next-gen is..." and that's probably it. They both have big things they need to talk about (Sony with Vita, exclusives, and whatever else and MS with Halo 4 and their rumored first party games) and there's still enough life left in this gen for another E3. Maybe a few things from 3rd parties like tech demos but no more than that.

Plus, I think they want to see what Nintendo will do and how people react to it. Though, that could go both ways.
  • Sony revealing the Orbis or Microsoft talking up the Durango wouldn't be revealing the new consoles...technically MS did that with Kinect.
  • I just hope my game library isnt useless on the new consoles. Yeah, I can just use my current ones, but it would be kind of a pain to switch back and forth.
  • Everyone is expecting PS4 by 2014 and XBOX 720 by 2013
  • I really want a PS4 right about now.
  • NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO. DON'T ANNOUNCE IT YET. WAIT ANOTHER YEAR!
  • I'm doing just fine with my PS3 for now. Give me atleast another 2 years to enjoy it, Before taking more of my money for a new console that probably won't play my PS3/Ps2 titles.
  • Yes camp counselor Steve, I like the fun video game news..... Video games are fun aren't they!?!
  • Don't stick to the stupid 10 year console cycle with the PS3! Give me the PS4 at the end of next year!
  • I don't expect any new hardware but I would expect some talk of the next generation of consoles but not much. I also think that some of the game developers will show off some screen shots or some videos of there new engines running on early versions of the next gen consoles. But mostly they will talk about the crowded fall release schedule and maybe announce some new games for this year and 2013.
  • Fairly confident there will be little discussed about the consoles themselves.  It will be all about vague promises to blow our minds...LOL.  Spare me.  I guess if I was an Xbox owner, I would be wanting a new system right about now but I am perfectly content with the PS3 as is.

I would prefer Sony channel more of there $$ into more great software development and maybe a bit more on advertising their exclusives better.  Honestly, I think a $50 price drop on the PS3 160GB would be better received by more folks than any discussion of next-gen consoles.

  • I want new hardware NOW!!! I also hate how people are not wanting hardware to be released so that 3rd parties will be stuck making all the games on consoles you own because you dont want to save up even though you have about 1.5 YEARS to actually save up for one. Talk about selfish greed....
