What Makes The Elder Scrolls Online A Modern MMO

With such long development cycles, it's difficult to create an MMO that feels modern. As the game director of The Elder Scrolls Online, Matt Firor wants to ensure that the game is heeding lessons from past MMOs. Working extensively in this one genre, Firor thinks that he has pinpointed several key downfalls of the genre and is looking to avoid them for ESO.   • I'm still probably not going to get this game unless it includes an FPS-style view. Every time I try to start playing any other MMO I just get tired of it. But playing an online Elder Scrolls with the same viewpoint of Oblivion and Skyrim would eat every nanosecond of my free time like there was no tomorrow.

  • It does, raise questions why it even is a MMO with such a strong solo playthru but at the same time I can see the logic because some people do just want solo stuff. It be cool if they can make you kinda become well known depending on how well you have done the solos maybe that be kinda cool.

  • Personal storyline, cross-class skill combos, quest events without needing to talk to a floating exclamation, rewards for everyone even if you're not grouped up...

    A LOT of the design philsophy of this game sounds very similar to Guild Wars 2. I'm not accusing them of ripping Arena Net off or anything. I know the games have both been in development a long time.

    It's just interesting to me that they share so many designs. I hope ESO doesn't prevent GW2 from being successful just because it's a more popular IP.
  • WOW another MMO process of the development: how can we make gads of money ? answer : create another mediocre piece of MMO tripe and milk our customers for monthly licensing fees reason: to milk their customers of a good portion of their money while delivering a buggy half a@# game please no elder scrolls online don't destroy a good franchise by turning it into yet another lamely produced poorly designed pile of tripe, honestly the guy in the picture above didn't get that gut from raping the pockets of his customers, but hes hungry to do it.
  • After playing Tera, it's a freaking tragedy that this kind of combat is not going to be anything like what's in the Elder Scrolls.

    They are making an outdated product, and of course Elder Scrolls has been all about bringing action combat to RPG frame works. Suddenly they had to go backwards for the MMO because 5 years ago server technology was not ready.

    BUT NOW IT IS READY. And the game still has a year to go before release.

    It's a true shame what this game could have been in this context.

    We could have had a true Elder Scrolls MMo experience instead of this compromise.

  • I think it wuld be great 2 let players decide things for thmeselves in the new game( like wether a hobo dies etc)

  • Errr, a solo/instanced main storyline isn't new.  SWTOR has that and some of the sidequests are even instanced as well.
