The Origins Of The Elder Scrolls Online

Matt Firor has spent twenty years in the game industry thinking about and creating online games. Once a leading voice at Mythic Entertainment and a producer on the beloved MMO Dark Age of Camelot, Firor left that studio and began the monumental task of taking The Elder Scrolls series online. With Oblivion as a rough starting point, there were years of head-scratching and team-building. Check out the video below to learn how the game began, Bethesda Game Studio's and Todd Howard's involvement, and how the team is attempting to the make the MMO a comfortable transition for fans of the series.

  • ive had enough of these *** ghost recon ads
  • I can't wait for this. I really hope it all comes together seamlessly. I have great confidence in the team over there, don't let me down!

  • I've heard good things about the DAOC pvp, and that game in general. I never tried it out, but if those good things get brought over it could turn out to be interesting.

  • so this is set a while before skyrim... "a long while" i remember reading. So does that mean snow elves and dwarves?
  • I'm kind of worried. The combat better not be a bunch of stupid hotkey mashing and dice rolling. Elder Scrolls' combat is what sets it apart, and is core to the gameplay as a whole. So if it plays like WoW and just about every other MMO out there, it's worthless to me personally. I really hope they rival Tera in terms of combat, and maybe take something from that where you're literally using skill and timing with your actions and movement to aim, dodge, and intelligently use the resources you have (mana + endurance) to be a victor over your enemies. That's why Skyrim is SO freaking fun! Let's do it again, and add the multiplayer element. That's my hope.
  • I'll have to see game play and/or take part in a beta test before I'm sold. From what I've learned it seems like combat is more like the big ticket MMO's that are coming out this year like Diablo 3 and Guildwars 2. In other words a lot more reflex based, I mean you have to block.

  • Can't wait to play it :)
  • Why do people feel the need to continually bash this game and say that it will fail? Listen, they just released news about the game only a few days ago and we know very little so far. Yes, the magazine and other information online may state specific thing about the game that we may not like. But keep in mind, the game is still in development and we won't know anything until they release actual gameplay footage. So before you go on bashing the game, think about the fact that we haven't even seen what it truly looks like yet, only a few screen shots. I personally think this game is a wonderful idea and being an Elder Scrolls Fan for around 6 years can support that statement. Only time will tell, and that's what people need to take into consideration.
  • 2 Requests: Don't *** up the lore too bad, make it all flow and feel natural with the canon of the universe. Also, can this please be free to play? I can hardly afford to pay monthly on top of the initial purchase of the game. Aside from that this looks to be an amazing game and I can't wait! <3

  • I'm hoping for the best, but I won't get to excited unless he combat system is something like what I would get from the single player game.

  • looks neet... but i want it to come to PS3, and i dont want to pay like in WoW

  • Turn-based combat, SWTOR engine, generic art style, no player housing, standard hot bar activated skills, etc...

Ultimately its all shaping up to be really cliche and boring. Its sounding like a real disappointment so far, the only thing intriguing so far is the PvP aspects. Given that a bunch of guys from DAOC are working on the game its not that surprising I guess.

I wish they didn't try to conform so much and just went out on a limb and tried to innovate more. I guess they figured either way they went it will be a cash cow because of the Elder Scrolls affiliation. They'll at least be right about that.

  • The more I hear about this game, the more excited I get.  I know that there are alot of people that just can't trust them, but I'm looking forward to playing it.

  • Hey Todd Howard...how about you just make a cooperative Elder Scrolls game..that is what people have been asking for....don't believe many people have been asking for this. Every Elder Scrolls fan I know that have read about this MMO has said the same thing when we talk about...."not much hope for this being anything but a WoW clone...not interested in playing another WoW clone"

  • I'd like to see more screen shots before I make a decision on this one.  I love the Elder Scrolls series and have been a fan since Morrowind.  I hope this lives up to the name.

  • This guy is incredibly switched on, having watched this video my thoughts on the success of Elder Scrolls Online just went up a few clicks.  Happy to hear that Bethesda's Todd Howard has a final look at what is going on.  Do the fans proud Mr Firor!

  • good interview, looks like all bases are covered. Good luck, I'll definitely try it out

  • I have reservations... but I so badly want to explore all of Tamriel. Just not sure if I want to do so under the constraints of MMO design. With the standard combat replaced with hotbar icons, it really makes me suspect this won't be the same experience at all. If this turns out to not be so great--perhaps even bad--I hope it doesn't tarnish the Elder Scrolls games to come.
