Gadgets, Guns, And Devils: The Sound Design Of Halo 4

Not only is Halo 4 starting anew for the music of the game, but the audio team led by Sotaro Tojima is hard at work amassing a gigantic library of sound effects for the new game. Rather than overly relying on stock sound effects from an existing library or from past Halo games, Sotaro and his colleagues are doing everything they can to ensure that the soundscape of Halo 4 will be fresh. Check out the video below to learn about the team's unique sound sources and the guiding philosophy behind them.

  • Thats pretty cool how they do their field recording

  • Looking forward to Halo 4

  • I've seen that patch before but I can't remember what unit it is... Lucky jerks!

  • What an awesome controller! Trying to figure out what version of PT he was using.

  • Im hoping the voice "Double kill, killtacular" ect... will be still in the game.

  • I really just dont think that sounds from real life like shooting a LAW should be a sound in the game, I like Halo because its a sci-fi and not realistic but the more pull towards realism the less I want the game
  • Sotaro seems very enthusiastic about his job with the sound design. Without a doubt, the sounds of Halo 4 are going to be phenomenal.
  • Know what this video just confirmed? Jen Taylor as cortana.
  • I want to get my hands on a copy so bad! I hope the menu soundtrack is sick as well. I can't even remember how many times I would turn on my Xbox and pop in Halo 3 for the music at the menu if I needed to do something like read and wanted some background music.

  • Those Tasmanian Devils...might they be the new villians???

  • That's all good and well but I for one would be disappointed if I booted up the game and wasn't welcomed by the iconic Halo "theme song". So when they say they're completely redoing the sounds I still hope they can keep it familiar enough so that Halo still sounds like Halo. My biggest fear with 343 is that they turn Halo into something it's not, but so far they seem to know what they're doing, although I can't say I'm very impressed with the new Call of Duty-esque class system. Still, it's going to take a bit more than that for me to completely give up hope. I guess we won't really know until fall.

  • The sound of Tasmanian Devils... It seems as if we'll get to fight new monsters :D

  • I do think some people won't give Halo 4 a chance because it isn't made by Bungie, but this team at 343 seems so humbled to work on the game and, by the looks of the coverage so far, are fully committed and invested in it. These interviews with Sotaro, O'Connor and all of the other team members only solidifies my certainty that this will be the best Halo entry to date.

  • @bracegirdle1942 If you don't like certain aspects of the game or the game itself, say so, but you said that you "don't want to hear about it anymore", yet you clicked on the article. So you're either trolling or expect GI to stop coverage of one of the most anticipated games of 2012 because of your personal preference. Either way, you're an idiot.
  • I would love this job.. nonetheless I seriously can't wait for Halo 4!

  • sounds like halo

  • That sound processor is AWSOME

  • neat. that guy is really enthusiastic about this. that's good for us.

  • Is that Jen Taylor's voice? God I hope so...
