Spartan Ops: The Bold New Co-Op Of Halo 4

In the second story for our week of multiplayer coverage we want to introduce and detail one of the largest new additions to the Halo package: the co-op mode called Spartan Ops. Broken up into seasons, these weekly doses of videos coupled with missions attempt to bring Halo fans back to the game on a regular basis, and give campaign players a reason to engage with the new narrative-focused multiplayer experience. Watch the video below to hear creative director Josh Holmes and lead Spartan Ops designer Chris Haluke explain the new mode and how they hope it will offer an inviting entrance into the integrated multiplayer world of Halo 4.

  • I'll post this in its own comment so hopefully people do see:

    1. Spartan Ops is not Spec Ops, the name is a placeholder that 343i gave when describing it, saying the closest thing to it is Spec Ops as co-op missions.

    2. However they're very different, Spartan Ops is a free episodic co-op mission arc that features five different missions a week and cutscenes that help to show the story behind the UNSC Infinity (Also not a bad name, It describes the biggest ship in the UNSC fleet which has a holo-deck capable of an infinite number of scenarios)

    3. For those who keep asking, the service of Spartan Ops is completely free, this isn't some CoD ELITE thing.

    4. For those who say 'But what if I miss an episode', apparently it's on the cards that you can replay all previous episodes, which of course fixes that issue.

If there's anything else, please comment and I'll try to answer as best I can

  • I hope that missions from past weeks will be saved so you can replay them at any time. That would mean that after 3 weeks, the Spartan-ops would be longer than pretty much every other Halo campaign (if we assume that the Spartan-ops missions are just as long as the SP missions). Since he said that Sp-O would be a "full campaign", and since we can probably assume that Sp-O will get new missions for more than three times, is it possible that Halo 4 will have a longer campaign than the past halo games? Also: was the thing in the little circle above the AR screen a new AA or a Sniper or something?
  • Even though 343's making some changes in the wrong direction(IMO), Halo 4 remains one of two games I plan on picking up this year. I honestly couldn't care less about Bioshock: Infinite or Mass Effect 3 or whatever else, I'm only interested in Halo 4 and Assassin's Creed 3. Now, back to Halo 4. As I said, 343's made some changes I don't like, such as a class and weapns system similar (clone?) to CoD. But I still think it'll be an enjoyable game. Perhaps it'll lose the Halo feel to a point, but still be a great game. And Spartan Ops seems to be a wonderful, unique(ish) addition. I have to admit though, nothing revealed about Halo 4 made me tremble with joy and anticipation like many Assassin's Creed 3 announcments did.
  • They should expand on this idea and transform it from episodes to an infinite MMO-experience, where you start on that ship, team up with your mates, buy equipment then move on to the open world Halo-ring, solve the objectives and conquer a part of it. As you progress you can order new vehicles and people will join you arriving at the checkpoints near your position.
  • Sounds great to me. Bummed to hear that Firefight will not be back though.

  • Screw the haters! I'm excited for Halo 4 and the new Spartan Ops feature. I love that they our "online" character is the same across both Spartan Ops and multiplayer. Can't wait to see how a this multiplayer will play out. I'm excited for it!

  • it's always rated 4 and a half stars, never a complete 5 star. i wonder whos the ass that always gives every popular article on gameinformer 1 star just to troll. UGH

  • Pre-ordered yesterday, November can't come soon enough

  • "THEY'RE CHANGING EVERYTHING I LOVED ABOUT HALO BLAH BLAH BLAH I HATE IT BLAH BLAH BLAH." Let's not turn into the 12-year-old Call of Duty fanbase, huh? I'm glad--ecstatic, even--that 343 is going to such lengths to create something new. While it sounds like a "Spec-Ops rip-off," you guys aren't clearly understanding what they're doing: they're adding story. They're adding characters, dialogue, and potentially whole new cut scenes completely unique from the singleplayer campaign. You fanboys underestimate the power of story.
  • I think its cool.

  • I am glad that they are making changes to the multiplayer to keep it fresh and new, but I have a little bit of skepticism about Spartan Ops.  Depending on how it works out, I hope that it is not just a series of missions where you do the same thing over and over again, like clear out the enemies here and do it again over there.  Having variety in these missions would do great.  I also want to know if there will be anymore space missions like in Halo Reach.  It would be amazing in both campaign and Spartan Ops, as they both deal with the ship and traversing between it and the planet.

  • Sounds like an incredible idea. I'm glad to hear that co-op will be more than the typical wave based survival mode that we see so much in shooters.

  • Wow, kindof copying off of CoD with Spartan Ops.
  • Hmm I hope this is fun.

  • wonder how long they will release it

  • geigh

  • Really looking forward to this. Spartan Ops sounds awesome.

  • Well, so there is co-op, great. I'm sure I'll mess with it and I'll play the campaign too, but I think most people are only here for the multiplayer!
  • Name...lame...idea..awsome....will it be good...probaly...will people care...maybe....will people probaly go and play more mindless cod...sadly....yes.
