Spartan Ops: The Bold New Co-Op Of Halo 4

In the second story for our week of multiplayer coverage we want to introduce and detail one of the largest new additions to the Halo package: the co-op mode called Spartan Ops. Broken up into seasons, these weekly doses of videos coupled with missions attempt to bring Halo fans back to the game on a regular basis, and give campaign players a reason to engage with the new narrative-focused multiplayer experience. Watch the video below to hear creative director Josh Holmes and lead Spartan Ops designer Chris Haluke explain the new mode and how they hope it will offer an inviting entrance into the integrated multiplayer world of Halo 4.

  • Getting a real ender's game feel off the way their presenting the multiplayer and co-op

  • Free missions that are tied in to campaign and multiplayer? Sounds good to me! DID I MENTION THEY ARE FREE!!! (thats to all you dumbasses who think you have to pay for each weekly iteration)
  • This sounds like a great idea, and could be my favorite part of the game, provided we don't have to pay for each episode. That would just be ridiculous. I can see maybe paying for each season. Maybe.
  • This sounds awesome.

  • Too cool. Think about it; we get two campaigns, one straight, one episodic. One with an established character, one we create. All of that, plus competitive multi-player. Truly a game changer. Can't wait!!!

  • This is gonna blow up in 343's face. Multiplayer is gonna suck too. Why in Gods name would they continue with Master Chief and start making up new canon when Bungie has already made up 25 years of warfare that they could expand on. Oh well, Halo has been dead since the failure of Reach.
  • Give me more cortana

  • You can't help but be skeptical when developers casually through around buzz words like "innovative" and "redefine" when it's clear that they are just trying to sell you something similar to what you've already experienced. When a developer outright states it's, say your average deathmatch with this, this and this, I for one am more open to whatever they are trying to tell me. This Spartan Ops just sounds like a narrative heavy Co-Op that is delivered in a forcefully drawn out fashion. That, to me, is not really redefining the multiplayer experience. I still wish 343 all the luck with the series.
  • Hope they explain the need for the new Spartan IV's. Spartan II's were created to fight the insurrection before the Covenant hit. Spartan III's were created specifically to fight the Covenant. What were the Spartan IV's created for? The process for creating Spartans was horrific and was only used as a last resort; maybe the fight isn't over for Earth yet. Or maybe I've read too many of the Halo books, which are great.
  • Wow, this looks pretty awesome.  I hope the game turns out great.  I loved the other halo games and hope the story and gameplay will be as good as the last ones. But so far the game looks great.

  • Sounds pretty cool, I'll admit I was saddened at first to hear firefight was getting the boot but these episodic missions sound like they'll be a lot of fun. The one thing I'm worried about is whether or not 343 is gonna lock out the multiplayer with an online pass. I know my brother is gonna want to get this game as well and it would be great if me and him didn't have to buy separate copies to both enjoy multiplayer.
  • Mod
Spartan Ops sounds awesome. I've enjoyed the campaign co-op in 3 and Reach but the idea of an episodic story that gives each player and character all their own that actually fits into it really excites me. And to the people complaining about it sounding too much like Spec-Ops: No.
  • Looks interesting

  • Is anyone else actually sick of the whole 'character progression' thing in multiplayer games today? I know the idea is to keep players playing longer by offering them rewards for playing more, but I tend to lose interest FASTER because of it.
  • Ok we'll see how this works out

  • anyone looking forward to this game send me a friend request on live my gt is Lol Its Pat
  • I just want to see a gameplay trailer... :(

  • I'm really hoping they can keep up the weekly stories. It seems easy to get unambitious about such a demanding segment of the game.

  • Yah at first glance I thought it sounded like spec ops but after watching the video they have me convinced. I wonder if you are gone for a week you simply miss that episode though...I wouldn't like that.
  • I appreciate what 343i is trying to do, but I didn't hear anything TRULY innovative. The episodic idea is interesting, but it wouldn't surprise me if these 5 weekly missions are 10-15 minutes.
