Halo 4's Changes To Competitive Multiplayer

This week at gameinformer.com is devoted to the changing face of Halo 4's multiplayer and we are starting things out by talking about the competitive side of things. You might have heard that 343 Industries is interested in making some changes to the classic Halo formula. We sat down with lead multiplayer designer Brad Welch to talk about the new emphasis on story, customizable loadouts, and the new and updated modes for Halo 4. Watch the video below to learn more about what your competitive multiplayer experience will look like in Halo 4 and stay tuned to the site throughout the week to learn about the new co-op experience called Spartan Ops.

  • stopped paying attention towards the end but for the love of god please don't put armor lock in the game(unless he said they did in the video already) and also don't make cloaking a starting ability. sprint is the only thing i choose to use in reach because i am strongly against all the other abilities.

  • I prefer just single-player in most games, personally.

  • Here's the thing.. I'm fine with evolution, but don't change the foundation of the gameplay. This new stuff is changing the foundation of the gameplay. Stuff that was at the core of the Halo experience - map control, fighting over the power weapons, teamwork - all that stuff no longer works the same way with these new changes. What does map control matter when you've got armor abilities like jetpacks, and seeing through walls? What does controlling power weapons matter if they spawn randomly? What do skill and teamwork matter, if everyone can start the game with different weapons and different equipment based on the fact that they've played the game longer? 343 isn't just evolving Halo, they're changing the very core of Halo, and that's why I'm upset.
  • A few things I noticed in the video, the screen behind him that has the spartans on it appears to be the new custom game screen. You can see that 3 spartans have the same helmet and the other 3 different ones.

Another thing I noticed on that screen is that after regicide there is the word UR. If you look at the other screen with the AR it has slayer UR, so maybe UR is the initials for one of the levels or something like that.

Also, on the screen with the AR there appears to be an icon which could be for the new gamemode.

  • Reach had allot of charm with the fact that you could just jump online and not have to worry about unlocking a bunch of crap. I've seen some cool stuff, but more so stuff that makes me cringe. Infinity? It just sounds stupid.
  • I'm not sure if I understood that correctly. You have to level up to unlock weapons and abilities? That completely changes what Halo multiplayer is. Why are they trying to copy Call of Duty/Battlefield? If people want to play those games, then they will.
  • Is it just me, or does anyone else think the SPARTAN IV looks really stupid?
  • i am so ready for this

  • Are they bringing back SWAT?
  • Thanks to www.HaloCouncil.com for sending me this way.  Some interesting info...

  • "We want it to feel more like COD".
  • Still extremely excited about this!! Halo Tradition was so great to hear em say. Please give us a MP open beta. The new armor looks over the top & I'm so very happy to hear that sprint is a default not an armor ability. Still hoping to hear about any news on assassinations & a lot more. Great coverage GI!!

To the people freaking out to what we heard in the video don't let a few clips of gameplay still far away from launch make you assume Halo isn't Halo anymore. Patience.

  • I think that the changes to the franchise will bring about new life into it, while retaining the critical elements that make Halo, Halo. Infinity, with it's full regiment of Spartans sounds great, and adds a new dimension to the game, not the continual same fight; Spartans VS. Elites.The fact that they gave a purpose to Red and Blue Spartan teams fighting is alright, but i think they made it out to be more that what it is in previous weeks. 'Spartan Credits' also sounds good, it's not very original in terms of what it actually is but its still good they put a name to it. They are bringing back Spartan armor customization in Halo 4 along with all the original custom game templates, but we all just get to create and design our own custom layouts, that includes;

    - Armor abilities

    - Weapons

    - Frags

    - And before and after game armor customization.

And as was said in the video, the amount of credits you get per a game, greatly depends on how well you perform within the match and what game type you play. (e.g. Regicide, the more bounty you gain on your head, and the longer you keep it for, the more Spartan Credits you will receive.

  • sounds pretty good

  • I like ^.^

  • This will be SICK!!!

  • Spartan Ops? Clever name, 343, I'll give them points for origionality.

  • has anyone noticed that the health bar its been appearing the same in all the videos? i liked the one from reach better. one bar shows you your shields and other bar shows you the actual health of the spartan and how many shots he can handle.

i find it hard to figure out every time i play Battle field, because the red-blackness of the screen is the only thing that is telling me how bad im injured, but nothing concrete

  • question is this game going to have a collector edition or something??
