Halo 4's Changes To Competitive Multiplayer

This week at gameinformer.com is devoted to the changing face of Halo 4's multiplayer and we are starting things out by talking about the competitive side of things. You might have heard that 343 Industries is interested in making some changes to the classic Halo formula. We sat down with lead multiplayer designer Brad Welch to talk about the new emphasis on story, customizable loadouts, and the new and updated modes for Halo 4. Watch the video below to learn more about what your competitive multiplayer experience will look like in Halo 4 and stay tuned to the site throughout the week to learn about the new co-op experience called Spartan Ops.

  • XP? Loadouts? LAME. Halo was always easier than Quake or Unreal, but it was still skill based. Ripping off Call of Duty is just going to make this terrible. What is with this attack on skill-based multiplayer? Why is everyone shooting to just be the new COD?
  • I liked the Reach multiplayer

  • 343, I had high expectations of you. I believed that Halo 4 would make a name for you finally, but no. I see that annoying little DMR in a Halo 4 screenshot? Unacceptable. You barely spent any effort on Halo CE Anniversary.Sure, it had that great campaign with beautiful graphics.A WAY too sensitive menu screen. But, the multilayer, which is in my opinion the best part of a game was severely severely *** up. I originally anticipated a game, similar to the original with the exception of the graphics, where we'd have ALL the original maps and that same beautiful multiplayer we all knew and loved. But no. You just made 2 maps, not even the most popular in Halo CE, and you just shoved them into Reach. "We want to keep Reach alive!" you said. No. Please don't, sure the engine didn't lag as bad as Halo 3, but that new 'staple' weapon. That damn DMR. It's overpowered as hell, tears up a vehicle in a matter of seconds, you'll spawn then as soon as you take at MOST as 10 steps you're being shot from some UNKNOWN location without ANY chances of figuring out, "Where's that *** shooting me f-" and 3 shots later you're dead. That is TERRIBLE. If it had not been for that 'lovely, new, point scan weapon!', the DMR. Halo Reach WOULD have been an amazing game, worth keeping live. That's the BIGGEST screw-up to be made So please,do NOT put that cheap little camper weapon in Halo 4. I know a good number of people who WILL NOT PURCHASE HALO 4 if there's even the SLIGHTEST confirmation of a DMR. Also, it's useless to 'lol bring back dmr?' when we already have the NON-POINT SCAN C: Battle Rifle Returning. However, I am pleased to see that there will NOT be armor lock, which is just as bad as a DMR. Please don't disappoint 343, we've been waiting for the arrival of Halo 4 for years now.
  • According to these comments, only CoD can have loadouts, and an in-game economy. God forbid a game change a little bit. If Halo stayed the same it would be no better than CoD. Majority of you are just hypocrites.

  • Why is everyone bashing 343 and saying that Halo is turning into CoD? I've heard of people actually complaining about there being no respawn time. Do you like to wait before getting back into the game or what? Have some faith in them. And if you say that all the real Halo fans wont like this then your wrong, because there are plenty of people who like loadouts and the change. If they have the same multiplayer in each halo game and no change then it will turn into CoD.
  • Halo here you come and $60 gone

  • Whether you like it or not COD is very popular for a reason.  343 is being incredibly smart by realizing the qualities of the game that are addicting and fun and adding them to the already crisp halo gameplay.  It is a win-win for halo fans and duty fans alike.  I am very excited.

  • At first I was a little hesitant with the changes that were being made to Halo but seeing the developers side of the changes and getting more insight into them I definitly am looking forward to Halo 4

  • Please 343, don't give spartans armor abilities and custom load outs. One of the most essential parts in a game of halo multiplayer is the fight over the powerful weapons and equipment. There should be equipment on the field and they should be more powerful than armor abilities, because you would only be able to use them once and for a short time. The grav lift was awesome, as was the bubble shield and trip mine. It was also so much fun to race to get the invisibility powerup Also, the ability that lets you see through walls is an AWFUL idea in my opinion.
  • I would really like to get a feel for how spartan ops is going to be!  It better be at least 3 time better than Halo 3: ODST's fire fight (reach's sucked!) or im not going to be very happy they got rid of fire fight.

  • i think the 4 player campaign co-op will be interesting...cant wait for this game...

  • All this talk about weapon loadouts is fine; but will we still have weapon spawns on the maps? Weapon placement has always dictated strategy in Halo in the past, and I don't won't Halo to rely only on a system that is more at home in Call of Duty or Battlefield.
  • sounds interesting...but i think my final thought of buying it or not would be to play a beta........but since there ISNT going to be one!!!.....i think 343i did a pretty stupid decision.

  • Still waiting on info for the new Spartan Ops mode.

  • i dont like it
  • thank 343 for i will never have to spawn with an assault rifle ever again.

  • time for a halothons(halo+marathons=halothons)

  • So im getting that Spartan 4s are potentially better than Spartan 2s... Not sure if thats true but it'd make the game pretty interesting.
  • I trust these guys to have forge, but I want to here about it soon.

  • So this is basically Call Of Halo 4?
