The Creative Director's Vision For Halo 4

As the co-creator of NBA Street and co-founder of Propaganda Games, Josh Holmes may sound like an odd choice for the creative director of Halo 4. Starting out testing sports games at EA (click here to see this bonus video where he talks about his worst day in the industry), Josh is a 15-year veteran of the gaming industry and he has worshipped Halo for 10 of those years. We asked him to share his first memories of playing Halo: Combat Evolved, what he sees as the pillars of the Halo series, and what changes he would like to make to the formula. Watch the video below and let us know what you think in the comments below.

  • HALO FOREVER

  • Knock it out the park

  • "Reserved Parking: Chief of the Week"

Me: I must have that sign!!! *Runs to the 343 HQ, rips sign off metal post, hangs up in bedroom*

  • looks good got my magazine today and tore it open

  • I trust this guy with halo 4,so far i think they are doing great with it.Though people are saying they announced there will be no flood in Halo 4,i was really looking forward to their return.Plus they arent even destroyed yet,the books say they still exist in the outer reaches of space. I wanted to see some Flood infected Forerunner,or something like that.
  • I can't wait for Halo 4 and the return of John-117 and Cortana. They are with out a doubt my favorite two characters in the Halo universe.

  • That was one of my problems with the Halo games, they lacked any sense of character development for Master Chief. I'm glad 343 is aiming for a more character driven story in Halo 4.

  • What changes would you like to make to the Halo series, sir?

Well we want to make Halo of Dut--I mean Halo 4 a fun shooter

  • Well this could go either very right or very wrong.

I'm optimistic. I mean the guy has tribal ink on his bicep for crying out loud!

To me, that says he's extreme, but he means business. XD

  • I have to say, I'm really pessimistic about Halo 4. It sounds like they have a bunch of guys who don't really get what makes Halo, Halo. Perks, classes, random weapon drops, multiplayer with a "story" (who asked for that?), armor customization with gameplay affects.... really, guys? Stop trying to make Halo something it's not. I'm all for evolution, but when evolution starts changing the fundamentals of how the game plays.... No matter what they do, it should always be "Two men enter, better man leaves, lesser man respawns etc." A lot of these new changes are really pushing the game away from that simple mentality. And Halo always was, and always should be, simple at heart. Sure it's had all kinds of cool features, some that were a first in the game industry, but the core gameplay was always very basic. That's what made it so fun and balanced in the first place.
  • Im looking forward to Halo 4. I really hope this re-energizes the series

  • As a HUGE Halo fan(played all game and own all games) i still am iffy on this game.Having classes, sprint, perks, instant respawn and all is very...different from past games. To me,this doesnt sound like Halo anymore...but hopefully once i play it,it will FEEL like Halo.
  • I'm not being serious or mean when I say this, but if he likes Halo so much, why does he have a captain Mctavish haircut?
  • In Halo multiplayer, each person should start with the same gun. A battle rifle. Classes do not exist. Everything is even. Teamwork determines power weapon struggle, map control, and final results of the match. That's what makes Halo games competitive and fun. That's what gives Halo its title. What Halo is evolving into fills me with sadness. It's a weird formula that doesn't represent the Halo franchise, and it takes away my entire drive to play the game online. Bring back the days of the Battle Rifle.
  • The more I hear about Halo 4, the less excited I become about it. Does anyone really care about how much story is in the game? Don't get me wrong, I really like learning more about the Halo universe from the novels, comics, etc., but that's where the bulk of the storytelling should stay. Halo singleplayer has always been about jumping from one battle to the next, with a threadbare (and usually nonsensical) story to connect everything. This kept the momentum going and the action epic. I have a feeling character development is just going to get in the way no matter how well written the story is.

And seeing how Halo 2 laid the blueprint of how to do a modern online FPS it sickens me that they're now jumping on the CoD perk/loadout bandwagon. The armor cusomization in Reach was perfect: it didn't change the game, it didn't create an artificial skill gap, and it was fun. It kept the core of the game intact, but still rewarded players for time invested. Now it sounds like we're getting a trendy "me too" template which will ruin the balance and purity that the franchise has always been about. This method just locks what should be available at the outset and gives you no reason to move around the map or hold any locations unless they're good places to camp.

I'm not ready to write this off as a failure yet, I'll still probably get it day one, but my expectations are extremely low.
  • I am finally starting to come around on this game.  I really love Halo, and I think this is looking good.

  • Forge? Still around? Or has the environment changing UNSC Infinity taken its place?

  • A nice journalistic piece. I was concerned about Halo 4 but this video has me pretty excited.

  • So, it looks like they are back in Bungie's original facility in Kirkland, Wa. I hope this game is going to be great. The artists they have working there obviously have a passion for Halo. Beautiful artwork.

  • Look I agree with a lot of people here who prefer to have everyone start with the same weapon in multiplayer, but do you guys really think that they won't have a game mode that will be exactly that? 343i has a hard job right now: they have to keep the multiplayer fresh while at the same time appealing to a modern audience as well as to the oldschool Halo community. That being said, yes, they will have a game mode that will play with classes (which I suspect won't even be remotely like Call of Duty) but they will more than certainly include a classic mode (no abilites, no classes, etc) that will play EXACTLY like old games. This company isn't stupid people. They'll bring back old modes like SWAT, MLG, etc. And how do I know this? Well its called common sense.
