Comparing Halo 4 to Halo 3

When Bungie split with Microsoft and parted ways with Halo, not everyone was interested in saying goodbye. Frank O' Connor decided to stay with the Halo universe and serve as the franchise development director for 343 Industries. Since he was heavily involved in the development, we talked to him about how Halo 4's narrative will connect with Halo 3 and how the formation of a new team has affected the tone of the series. Watch the video below to see what he has to say, and feel free to check out this bonus portion of the interview on our YouTube channel in which he talks about the difference in studio cultures between Bungie and 343 Industries.

  • Hallo 3 will always have a special place in my heart. I do not like the way 343 is going about Halo 4 at all. They are adding ADS, sprint on every loadout, random gun drops (WTF) and other mechanics from casual FPS games.

    Seriously 343, not cool.
  • That's interesting. Too bad I don't have an Xbox anymore.
  • Hi Brenda.
  • I wasn't excited for Reach as much as I am for 4. I missed that big lug.

  • "We've got guys from Infinity Ward, Metroid, Metal Gear Solid..." Yep, those are all the same. Joking aside, I definitely want to see what this game is like. Interestingly, he did confirm Grunts will be reappearing in Halo 4.
  • I've never been a Microsoft guy, but I'm certainly interested to see how this one pans out.
  • I'm just going to use a "wait and see" approach until this game is released. I'm not exactly thrilled by the additions 343 has added but I'll give them a chance. Hopefully, we'll hear more story developments soon.
  • One of my friends told me that Halo 4 is going to be on PC. I don't really believe him, but if it's true, then I'm going to buy the game. This looks like a good time to jump into the Halo series.
  • Can't wait to see how Halo 4 turns out.

  • Don't hate 343 bungie decided to leave and 343 has to pick up the slack even if some ideas aren't that great there trying if it wasn't for them halo 4 could have changed alot more for the worse.
  • Halo3=very good game
  • I am excited to see where 343 will take the series.

  • The difference is the different number.
  • Most of the changes 343 are putting into Halo are awful. Its making the game way to casual. Halo vets are definitely going to be put off in a way by these new changes. The game will be catering to noobs. I am very dissapointed in 343 for possibly ruining the Halo franchise.
  • *nods* I can dig it. A proper reinventing as the franchise gets entirely handed off... makes sense. I owe no loyalty to Bungie or any specific Halo entry from the past, so I'm sure I'll enjoy Halo 4... I just hope the rift between fans won't be too severe once it's shipped.

  • I have very high hopes for this next trilogy. In my opinion, random weapon drops have been long overdue and being able to sprint is definitely a plus. These are just basic things that I think should have been implemented way back in Halo 3 and don't take anything away from the overall experience. It seems like nice work in multiplayer so far, but I guess time will tell.

I'll spend a lot of time playing online with my friends, but the campaign will always be my bread and butter. Do that right and I won't have any complaints, although my personal opinion is that 343 should take a cue from Epic and recruit Karen Traviss to handle the writing for the new trilogy. Obviously, they haven't done that, but a man can dream.
  • With every new halo game, it looks and feels less and less like its self. It's trying to hard to be cool and fit in with the rest of the crowd. MW didn't become popular by copying everyone else, no they went there own way. So sick of all these MW wanna bes

Seriously NOTHING they've been said to add makes me happy or excited. Sprinting, more power ups, custom load outs, random weapon drops.... This really pisses me off. I've played this game religiously since Halo 1 and all these rumors have me disappointed to say the least.
  • Halo 3 was the peak of the Halo franchise (multiplayer-wise anyway). 343 had a chance to right the wrongs of Reach, but they've just exacerbated them.
  • So... There will be covenant..? Or was he just randomly mentioning the grunts..?
  • As per the usual internet standard, people are complaining about Halo 4 being too "casual" without having played any demo or anything. Keep it classy, internet.
