Spoiled! Mass Effect 3

The excitement from fans up to the release of Mass Effect 3 has only been matched in intensity by the uproar over the end of the trilogy. From those who love it to those who are asking for a refund, gamers who have finished the game have no shortage of opinions over how Shepard's story is wrapped up. Game Informer's Andrew Reiner, Matt Miller, and Joe Juba sat down to share their thoughts on the ending and to discuss the enthusiastic reaction from the fans.

  • Gosh it is so tempting to watch. I want to know what everyone's talking about... but then it will lose some of the impact of having built to this point for a third game.

You guys are killing me here.
  • Great vid
  • am i the only one who liked the endings?
  • I am not mad about the endings as endings... What I didn't like was that for a game full of Epic Awesome Cutscenes (Reaper vs Maw anyone?), the endings were dull.
  • Thanks
  • this vid perfectly explains my feelings. Riener, you nailed it. It made us think, our actions had direct impact on the future. yes the cutscenes are the same, but they are NOT just color palette swaps, each ending has different implications, and thats not even taking into account the indoctrination theory (which is pure genius, imo)

how do you know you're doing it right? if you make us think. thats how. its why Red Dead Redemption, fallout 3 (pre broken steel), and mass effect all have such impact.
  • What I mainly disliked about the ending is that no matter what you choose, everyone is still stranded on Earth, where they'd most likely die. Plus the fact Bioware included one of the biggest Deus Ex Machina's ever, especially one that wasn't needed.
  • http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rPelM2hwhJA This video shows 6 endings on the same screen, besides the different colored explosions they are almost EXACTLY THE SAME. Almost none of your choices leading up to the ending matter; and not to mention all of the glaring plot holes and zero closure. It's just disappointing that a series who's strengths are storytelling, character development and most of all, choice leaves all of them out of the ending. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ythY_GkEBck If the indoctrination theory is true then the ending is brilliant, most things they did would make sense; but still there is no closure. Which is what most of the fans wanted.
  • You know, I do enjoy some of the symbolism in the game (the garden of Eden is a bit hamfisted), but overall I did enjoy a lot of the ending. The ending song is especially perfect and completely describes the series as a whole. Perhaps the ending song is the reason I am not as mad at the ending as others (however, having Liara and Garrus pop up after they were just with me was moronic, even if that indoctrination theory is true).
  • *SPOILERS* My idea about the kid was that he didn't exist outside of Shepard's own mind. Every scene that the kid is shown in either only has Shepard, like the scene aboard the catalyst, or has other people who seemingly never see him. For example, in the only scene where the kid is "alive" Anderson never sees him and then when he gets on the shuttle, the soldiers defending the shuttle don't move him in or motion for him to get in and nobody aboard the shuttle helps this small child get on board or notice him at all. Just my two cents. I think the child might just be a visualization for Shepard of his own need to help people and not being able to fulfill that need.
  • This is exactly why I like Mass Effect 3's ending. There's so much to dissect and talk about. It's really fun for me to just think about what what happened.
  • We demand a Purple ending!
  • This is a good video. Pleased to see that criticism of the endings wasn't just brushed off as "gamer entitlement".
  • one thing I would have liked is a dialogue sequence with the Catalyst. That would give some much needed closure to the end of the game.
  • Finally!!! It's about time someone starts talking about the ending!
  • That was seriously awesome to watch. Spot on with the flow-chart reference.
  • I completely agreed with Reiner...the ME trilogy is one of my favorite gaming experiences of all time!

  • Okay I said this already but I will clarify why I love it.Have you read; Do androids dream of electric sheep? Or perhaps seen Bladerunner? If the answer is no then you should, you would appreciate the ending much more. All of EDI's character development, Javik and Legion, and the entire plot of the game is centered on the duality of synthetics and organics, fighting for what it means to be organic or synthetic and for reason to live as one, thus the real reason behind fighting the reapers. It's more or less about the struggle for sentience and peace between organics and synthetics; it was never about survival. Shepard realizes this in his/her final moments. Even the catalyst could never realize this, Unless you were to promote synthesis: "the final stage of life." Therefore synthesis makes organics understand what it means to be synthetic and vice versa, something that is completely uncomprehensible to synthetic or organic, therefore you are given that option to make peace with organic and synthetic alike for eternity. That's my way of thinking, I don't know but when I came up with this I kept on thinking about how the indoctrination theory may or may not be true. "Does this unit have a soul?"
  • Lackluster finish to an otherwise exceptional experience.
  • H8 2 C it N!!!
