Meet The New Creative Director For Assassin's Creed III

Assassin's Creed III introduces players to a new protagonist, a new setting, and pulling all the strings a new creative director working behind the scenes. Starting in Australia at a studio that specialized in licensed games for the Game Boy Advance, Alex Hutchinson worked his way through the ranks at Maxis to eventually become the lead designer on Spore. To learn Alex's thoughts on narrative in games and how Spore has influenced his take on Assassin's Creed III, watch this bonus portion of his interview on our YouTube channel.

Alex Hutchinson's unique path through the gaming industry fuels his fresh take on the Assassin's Creed series. Watch the video below to learn about his history in games, the development of Assassin's Creed III, and why colonial America will be the ideal playground for an assassin.

  • I think its great how he wants to focus more on the technical side in the gameplay. Story in this franchise is already great, so I think putting focus on parts that have the most potential, like combat and platforming, will make this game awesome
  • Nice interview.  Alex has certainly come a long way to land the role of creative director in AC3.  As a fellow Aussie Alex, please make sure the 'gameplay' is actually challenging!

Love the setting and I'm really looking forward to this game.

  • So thankful for this new setting as I feel after acII none of the games reached the same greatness acII achieved. I'm also wondering how this will intertwine with Desmond's own story, as this is the final chapter for him I'm wondering how big the focus will be on Desmond himself.

  • ha, the blade on the tomahawk is the assassin's symbol, that's awesome.

  • He seems to have his *** together...

    I WANT THIS GAME!!!

  • Haha, the guy in the background is playing TF2! Also, what he said is true, not many games are set in Revolutionary War America. I love the American Revolution, so cool. I hope they don't do a couple things in this game though. One, make the founding fathers look like idiots/weirdos. Two, get rid of stupid things we did back then such as slavery just to be "politically correct". Really, politics isn't that correct the way it is set up right now. The founding fathers I think would be ashamed to see the country in this state. Finally three, I want them to make America the good guys (Because we are).
  • Keep up the good work Mr. Hutchinson! I really liked Spore and glad you've been put in charge of the creative department of my favorite game series! History can be exciting and that is why I love it. I like how you talked about breaking up the linear going from mission to mission, i think the missions/story in AC Revelations played out really naturally and kept me excited the whole way through, it had good pace basically, keep up the pace in 3!

My name is Shane Harty and I write for my schools online journal Red Skies, if you ever have time in the future I would love to interview you, my email is thetimeisnow19@gmail.com if you felt incline to get in contact with me.

I am already putting my money on AC3 for game of the year, get it!

  • cool video, and im really excited to have assassins creed 3 during the American revolution!

  • i hope this goes on the vita!!!

  • what is that guy playing in the background?
  • I'm happy this game is set where it is and for in Japan like so many people predicted after the ACII. I imagine they'd explore Japan or the Asian setting in a spin off or side game since the girl from Embers was from Asia.
  • I  like that guy, he made me a believer!

  • This will win game of the year for sure.
  • So am I still safe to assume the game will take place in the Big Apple? eh? eh?
  • Omg, this game looks great. I bet the combat mechanics are gonna be different. In the first game, you really felt the intensity of a kill, which you should, killing someone isn't just some squishy sound or just faint sounds of hitting someone with a hammer. It's much more gritty. As the games progressed it became less intense. I hope they bring back that same intensity that came before. Plus, free running in forests just sounds epic

  • I have such high hopes for this game. Im hoping with all my heart that it turns out great.

  • I liked everything I heard. Can't wait to see more.

  • Great video. The creative director sounds fantastic. I'm excited for this month with all the ACIII info. This game is sounding amazing!

  • That is a really well spoken man, im surprised by just listening to him I feel as if im more intelligent. He seems down to earth and he knows what he is talking about and I feel like those two things are what a studio needs to stay alive.

  • this guy seems good. im gaining confidence
