Capturing Joel And Ellie For The Last Of Us

Naughty Dog's Uncharted trilogy received plenty of praise for the natural performances from the actors and the all-encompassing method of capturing that performance. The same techniques are being applied to Naughty Dog's new IP, The Last of Us. By capturing both the motions and vocal performance of the actors, the characters in the game feel more unified and real. Watch the video below to learn more about the actors behind Joel and Ellie and to see their raw performances.

  • Thanks so much for posting such great content like this. As a creative person, I find inspiration from features like this even though I don't work in the game industry. Who needs facebook when you have GI! thanks!

  • I wish I could shoot and edit these pieces, it fits in with what i want to do in life... stay in video games but let me create and edit.

  • Troy Baker is the new Nolan North.

  • I know that female actor.. she use to be more well known years ago.  Her brother must be that guy from Mel Gibson movie HOSTAGE.  Anyway, neither of them look like the characters in the game.. Thankfully so.  Wouldn't be nearly as cool.

  • Wow they are putting a lot of effort in this game

  • I wasn't sure, but I looked it up, and Ellie's voice actor is the daughter from What Women Want. Who figured?

  • Cute girl. Cool to see the behind the scenes process.

  • Nice vid Game Informer.  Thank you!

  • Ashley Jhonson....sorry but what an ugly name lol.

  • I remember first seeing the trailer for "The Last of Us" during the VGAs, and the first thing I thought (aside from "Wow", of course,) was "That's Ashley Johnson, isn't it?" I guess that hearing her voice every week as Gwen Tennyson on "Ben 10" was enough to make me recognize it instantly!!
  • wow the motion capture is looking good for this game

  • Cool video, if I even knew where to begin such a career I'd love to do mocap/voice acting for video games.

Also, fun fact for those who didn't get to read the latest GI cover story of The Last of Us: Troy Baker also does the voice of Robin and Two-Face in Arkham City, Snow in Final Fantasy XIII, and he's doing the voice of the protagonist Booker DeWitt in Bioshock Infinite.

  • I love how Naughty Dog thinks their better then everyone.

  • Hahaha its funny seeing them act out stuff.

  • Really like this. I'd love to do this as a career (voice acting, motion actor) but I don't think I have the personality for it.

  • I love these behind the scenes footage of the game. Its cool to see how they capture these moments.

  • So cool!

  • If I was making a game, this is how I would want to do my character too. I'm surprised more developers, especially ones who really want story to be a big part of the experience, don't do this.
  • After seeing this and realizing how much effort Naughty Dog is putting into this game, I'm actually starting to become more optimistic about how this will turn out.

  • Naughty Dog is by far the best action/adventure game studio in the industry. This and the Uncharted series makes my head spin with how friggin' amazing they are.
