Replay: 50 Cent: Bulletproof

Sometimes on Replay we reminisce about old games that we love, and other times we function as therapy. On this week's episode, Tim Turi, Kyle Hilliard, and I are joined by special guest Haydn Dalton, the lead designer of Darksiders II. Haydn was also involved in developing a notoriously flawed but distressingly successful game called 50 Cent: Bulletproof.

We sit Haydn down for his first serious time with Bulletproof since he shipped the game. In addition to some goofing around, Haydn gives us some great insight into how troubled development can drag down talented game makers and some of the problems this specific project faced. After that, Haydn sticks around to show us another slightly less terrible project that he has his fingerprints on.

Special thanks go out to Haydn for being such a good sport in taking a look at what was surely a difficult project for him and putting up with our dumb jokes. Show him some love by checking out the first Darksiders if you haven't yet. It's awesome! You can check out more of Haydn's commentary and Darksiders in the developer commentary video that we recorded last summer.

  • nice, but why are we back to the old player?
  • I actually liked the 50 Cent game, but i have no idea why :D
  • I liked the second game much better. True, it still was pretty terrible, but it was a blast to play
  • You guys should seriously do this more often, I would love it if you brought a Naughty Dog employee and make them play Crash Bandicoot with you.

btw that guy should totally come back , he's cool.
  • Always cool to have members of the game industry come in for Replay. Just as with Randy Pitchford and Aram Jabbari's appearances, it's always cool to get the behind-the-scenes information regarding how games are designed and promoted. Makes me feel a little bit smarter about how the game industry work. Also, a shout out to Haydn: I never played Bulletproof, so I can't comment on it. However, with what I have seen with the Darksiders franchise, you have moved on pretty well since 50 Cent. Keep up the good work, man.
  • I'm not a fan of 50 cent's music or this game but i'll watch this just out of boredem

edit: leaves after less then five minutes of watching
  • Really cool feature guys.  You always hear about the dev process of good games...pretty cool to see inside the dev process of a not-so-great one!

  • Oh, now this should be good... Entertainment for the viewer-wise.
  • Did he also work on Blood on the Sand? That game is actually pretty decent if you play with a buddy

  • This game was dope when it can out, Fast paced action shooter with an amazing sound track. G Unit

  • Could you guys play The Warriors PS2 game next/soon please!
  • Now this I wanna see. Just to point and laugh :P

Edit: 50 Cent seemed better than I thought. But than again, this Replay was more on the serious side. Still good tho.
  • Very cool having a developer on Replay. It's so much more interesting when a dev like Aram or Haydn are there to talk about the industry from an inside view.

  • It was quite cool and interesting to hear someone associated with a game you played talk about making it, even if it was this game.

  • You guys need to go pick up another copy of Maximum Carnage.  That game is classic.

  • It was really interesting to hear about the dev process for this one, I've always been curious about what went on behind the scenes. You should bring Haydn back too, he's pretty funny.

Also, I would like to see a replay of Klonoa. Truly an under appreciated platforming gem.

  • Excellent and very interesting Replay! It's great to hear from the other side of the video game spectrum.

  • excellent episode, guys. i suggest turning subtitles on for every game, just so we can get an idea of what's going on in game in addition to hearing your banter.

  • I LOVE DANGER MOUSE! I have the whole DVD collection of Danger Mouse. Only 24 and know about lol. As for the games. I never played 50 Cent game as I was slightly sad by how it turned out. Thought it would have been better than some of the other gang games as it was 50 Cent. Yet it didn't. Still not sadden by avoiding it. As for the Pick....I never played it....slightly not very video game player way back then.

  • nice replay guys, thanks!
