Risk And Consequence: Combat In The Last Of Us

If you've been following our coverage for The Last of Us, you know about the story and inspirations for Naughty Dog's new IP but you are probably still curious about how the game plays. The team in Santa Monica is attempting to bring a raw sense of humanity to every aspect of the game and they are striving to make every enemy encounter leave a lasting impression. The game director Bruce Straley and creative director Neil Druckmann want to push enemy AI beyond the standard mindless henchman and to evolve the companion AI of Ellie away from a vapid escortee. Watch the video below to learn what choices you'll have and how Ellie can assist you in combat scenarios for The Last of Us.

  • Hmm interesting to listen to but i'll wait till we see some of these ideas put into action :p.
  • This game looks like it has a lot of potential, as long as they dont f*** up Ellies AI
  • Love it more and more each time. I especially hope they pull off Ellie's AI.
  • I'm almost 100% sure that The Last Of Us will include co-op, and based on what the devs said in the interview playing with an AI ally will not be frustrating. I'm looking forward to this game. 2012 is turning into a great year for games.
  • They didn't really say much did they? It all sounded very vague...
  • Non-regenerative health whereas most shooters go with the opposite. I think it'll be a good mechanic, and like they said, will lead the player to make certain choices knowing that a few seconds won't fully heal him/her.
  • From the preliminary interviews and coverage I have high hopes for this game. It looks detailed, provoking, and seems to be hitting a different market niche from other 3rd/FPS. Hopefully Naughty Dog will really deliver on this one, because it looks like Sony is sinking a lot of dough into advertising and coverage.

  • Really looking forward to this game! =)

  • I keep getting more and more excited about this game.

  • Coming off of the Uncharted series, it's pretty hard for me not to be excited for the next Naughty Dog project. Regardless, just from the way they're talking about approaching things like enemy AI, Ellie's role in the experience, and non-regenerative health... it's starting to look seriously good.
  • Just have good AI! Please!
  • Lets hope....UC3 had terribly scripted AI...I tried sneaking around this one level (the one where i had to look at the stars to find a door below)....got all the way to the objective by silently taking guys out, but couldn't activate it when I got there because there were more enemies left. wtf?
  • As soon as I heard No Country For Old Men would be an influence, I was sold. Take my money.

  • It seems that the balding guy really didn't want the other guy to talk, and towards the end, I began to see why. :/

The gameplay mechanics seem cool enough. One thing I want fixed in this game from Uncharted is the sometimes slippery controls, especially in cover.

And when they were talking about what to do if you have no ammo, I kept expecting them to say you can bluff having ammo and point your gun at someone to threaten them. Just because it's in I Am Alive, it doesn't mean they can't use it as well. Not that that's why it's not there, but still.
  • That thumbnail on the home page looks like they're just palin' around.

  • Interesting. Hope it's as good as it sounds.
  • At this point you'd think people would be bored of zombie games, but this game looks like it'll be genuinely great and unique.
  • The news emerging about this game is what is keeping me going during the dreary month of February.

  • i got this game on radar...i still dont have a ps3 but maybe this game could be the determining factor...
  • AI is probably the same as unsharted AI just having higher health and damage.
