The Madden NFL 13 Wishlist

Unlike previous years, EA Sports and developer EA Tiburon aren't going to talk about upcoming title Madden NFL 13 during the Super Bowl. But that's not going to stop us from unveiling our wishlist for the game.

Apart from the usual baseline of bug fixes and improvement tweakings, Madden 13 has a long way to go to improve upon Madden 12. We don't know what EA Tiburon's focus is going to be this year, but we hope that as a whole the spotlight is on getting this series back on track instead of adding new features nobody asked for.

This year the Madden franchise faces a particular challenge in trying to move on after the departure of long-time development veterans like Ian Cummings, Phil Frazier, and a host of other personnel that have left. There's no way to know how this will effect the series, so here's hoping that the new blood will be good for the franchise.

Feel free to post your own ideas in the comments section – we know you've got plenty.

THE MADDEN NFL 13 WISHLIST
+Items italicized where also specifically mentioned in last year's list and have yet to be implemented or fixed!

General

  • No more fan voting for the cover athlete. We don't need another Peyton Hillis debacle
  • A better menu system. The current system obscures info onscreen, buries other menus, and is confusing in general
  • Better crowds and sideline players
  • Create-A-Play feature
  • Fix numerous bugs

Gameplay

  • AI that can accurately throw short passes to the flats and sidelines
  • QBs take too many sacks instead of either getting the ball off or throwing a wobbly pass
  • More information on the GameFlow plays so you know when you're choosing a 4-3 Cover 2 formation vs. a 3-4 one, for instance. Could we get a thumbnail of the play art?
  • An improved kicking game taking more variables into account and which is more challenging overall
  • The ability to create offensive and defensive player packages outside of a game situation
  • A better range of penalties called and fixes to the challenge system. Challenges aren't available when they should be, and the final calls can be baffling (like real life, we guess!)

+ New blocking logic for the second level so fullbacks and pulling guards put their hats on the immediate threat
+ True gang tackles
+ New passing trajectories to cut down on linebacker interceptions over the middle and scaling down of jumping linebackers
+ More ball awareness by players in the passing game, including better head tracking
+ Receivers come back for the ball and more jostling between the DBs and WRs – including the importance of the pass interference penalty
+ Make the fumble animations, minigame, and outcome match each other. Too many times what you see and who comes up with the ball is completely different
+ Defensive ends aren't effective in rushing the passer: A far cry from their importance in real life
+ Too many gimme INTs dropped
+ Better special teams blocking
+ Fewer canned animations and more real physics-based movement

  • Sweet first. Ummmmm, go Dolphins. Bla, Bla, Bla. Yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! Oh and I hope you can make your own team. Like The Lehigh Gingers. Ya!
  • Madden used to be really good, but has dwindled since, ill say Madden 06. 12 was popular, but not good. If EA can send in some people that know a whole lot about football to help out their designers, Madden 13 could be great.

  • I hated how all of the linebackers seemed to have rocketpacks and could deflect any pass thrown.
  • I would love it if they made a game every 2 years and just had stat updates every week
  • no more creepy looking players.

  • I wish they would let someone else make a NFL game. That would be my wish come true. 2K sports was much better.
  • I wish they would stop re-releasing these games every year with some updated skins.
  • 1. Tom Brady on the cover 2. create-a-play (sounds very tempting) 3. create-a-team (the patriots with a new name is what i would do) 4. like in NBA 2K12 create a legends mode where you can play as the best football players and relive some of the best games
  • scrap the current game engine, bring in a whole new dev team and rebuild the whole thing from the ground up, this franchise has been garbage during this gen.

  • No more Green Bay Packers. That's it!
  • I love football; from Tecmo Super Bowl, the 90's and early 2000's Madden games, NFL Gameday and NFL Gameday 98, a couple of the NFL Quarterback Club games, to all the NFL2K's, the NFL has always been one of my favorite gaming pastimes.  Yet since EA locked up the NFL license Madden has gotten worse and worse (I thought Madden10 was ok though.  I enjoyed the ease in calling audibles and hot routes, the fight for extra yards, and generally when you caught passes in the flats the RB's momentum didn't always take him right out of bounds which is an issue in most Madden games, and for the most part if you called the right play against the right defense almost any pass route could be completed...meaning I could actually utilize my whole playbook.)  Nevertheless, in my opinion EA Tiburon is one of the biggest jokes in gaming.  If not for excellent marketing people wouldn't keep paying $60 for this rubbish.

  • There is no create-a-play?  I haven't played a Madden game in several years but I remember there being a create-a-play mode in the one of the Madden games I've played before.  I wonder why they took it out.

  • EA needs to build a new game from the ground up. Biggest area to focus on should be a good physics engine. the game of football is so fun to watch because we as fans get to see players throw their bodily mass at each other and we get to see the effects of speed, size , and leverage on these players bodies. This beautiful aspect of the game cant be told through preset animations. even though BACKBREAKER sucked if EA could take that engine and fine tune it then i might actually buy another madden. till then long live NFL 2k5. HERES AN IDEA FOR THE NFL. LET MADDEN KEEP THE RIGHTS TO NFL TEAM LOGOS AND STADIUMS. THEN LET THE PLAYERS NAMES BE SHARED BY MADDEN AND ANY OTHER COMPANIES THAT MIGHT WANT TO USE THE CURRENT NAMES OF THE NFL STARS. THIS WOULD ALLOW MADDEN TO BE THE ONE TRUE NFL GAME AT THE SAME TIME ALLOWING A COMPANY LIKE 2K TO MAKE A FANTASY FOOTBALL GAME.
  • A way to put specific players in specific formations by selecting the position from a formation selection screen and then the player from a player selection tree. Especially with special teams, so I don't have starters on kickoff and return. I also like to put my #3 receiver in the #1 spot in a few formations, but not all. Doing this, unfortunetly, I have to constantly go to my depth chart and switch them in and out.
  • Reliving historical games would be SAWEEET.

  • How about online co-op Franchise, you know like couch co-op Franchise. I join the military and now cannot even play with my buddies back home. We would always try to out tackle, INT, you name it. And have the computer settings on All-Madden. Forget ULTIMATE team for losers without friends anywhere.
  • I wished they'd go back back to the old kicking system, i hate using the joystick for it, especially on online play. Also i think they need to work on the dbs interception skill i know not all of them have hands but i mean when the qb throws a ball at there chest they should drop it all the time.
  • Sadly...it is destined to be a poor rehash of last year's edition which was a rehash of the previous year's edition and so on. Madden 12 was such a let down I skipped out on it completely and have no desire to buy one until proven it is a truly great game. I'm done with mediocre.
  • how about a madden where it updates it self, like the stats and stuff like that. so i dont have to keep spending 60 bucks on the same game just better graphics and maybe sum pointless featurs

srry if i miss speld anything O_o

  • I want a playoff mode where I can select and seed the teams any way I wish.
