Replay: Super Mario Bros. 2

If you ever read my blog that listed my top ten Mario games, you know I have fond memories of Super Mario Bros. 2. Many gamers don't consider it a "real" Mario game considering that it was originally Doki Doki Panic in Japan, but I say nuts to that. The game is better than the original, and certainly better than the ludicrously hard Japanese Super Mario Bros. 2.

I went into this Replay confident that it would still be a ton of fun, and it didn't disappoint. Watch below as I play the game (and end season 1 of Replay) along with commentary from Andrew Reiner, Joe Juba, and Matt Helgeson.

  • I thought I had nothing going on this Friday night, but you guys post a Replay up, and of Super Mario Bros. 2! Thanks GI!!!
  • Replay? At 12:13 (Mountain time)? Count me in... after Red vs Blue.

  • Ahh, Super Mario Bros. 2. A fine choice you have made.

  • SMB2 was the first Super Mario Bros. game I completed and I actually like it quite a bit. ^_^
  • so...dan thinks that doki doki panic has better gameplay than the first mario?
  • I love the real Super Mario Bros. 2 infinitely more than Super Mario USA. The real one has such awesome brutally hard level design that remixes all of the stuff seen in Mario 1 to produce all new challenges you wouldn't think were possible when playing through the original. There are plenty memorable moments though my favorite is after a really difficult final castle the game ends with you fighting not one but a second surprise Bowser which is absolutely terrifying and thrilling at the same time. Also I do love that after you beat the game, you unlock a bizarre world 9 and worlds A, B, C, and D which further extends the game.

I do love Super Mario USA, but Super Mario Bros 2 is the better game for me. I fully understand most people will pick the opposite game but that's my defense of Super Mario Bros 2. Should be a good replay!

Edit: If you Super Replay it, you should use the All-Stars Collection since it lets you save after every completed level and you get 5 lives instead of 3. Plus the graphics look better. Also playing as Luigi is the way to go for the game since there are some jumps that are borderline impossible with Mario and some optional ones that are impossible without Luigi.
  • I stayed up later than I should watching Freddy vs Jason. I'm really tired. And then Replay pops up. Scumbag Game Informer, I tells ya.

    *Watches Replay*

    Edit: TOTALLY FREAKING WORTH IT.

This may have been the funniest episode since Revolution X, or even Mortal Kombat Mythologies! ...Sorry Dan. :)
  • *** don't you guys ever not do work related stuff? Its 3:00 AM here XD

  • This very well may be my new favorite episode.

  • OMG possibly my fav. Replay episode to date. I was dying from laughter! We need the Super Replay, so we have more Dan screaming moments.

  • Haha, I find myself chatting along and commenting on the game to myself. Great video guys! Gonna have to play SMB2 later now.

Oh by the way, you guys were talking about Super Mario Crossover.
  • That was a great replay; one of my favorites. I would pay for Dan to do both Super Mario Bros 2 and Lost Levels as one big Super Replay. As for your save state thing. Just play it on All-Stars since that version saves after each world.

  • I love this game!

  • I was just wondering yesterday if you guys were going to Replay this game.  I'm on board with xghost777.  If you guys do a Super Replay, use All Stars.

  • I would love a Lost Levels Super Replay! Like everyone else is saying, just use the All-Stars version. We'd have to sacrifice the awesome 8-bit graphics, but you'd be able to save.
  • Lost Levels (aka real Mario 2) is SO hard...I've never gotten past the World 3 castle. Awesome job on "season 1" of Replay! I'm looking forward to next season!

  • I'm with you Reiner.  Once I saw how fast Toad pulled stuff out of the ground, I never used any of the other characters again.  Also, this game will always be a "real" Mario game to me.  It was years after it's release when I found out how it came to be, but it didn't change anything for me.

  • That bird scared me bad the first time I saw it! I was so hesitant back then!

Dan needs happy thoughts in his 2D life

  • Cool to see you guys adopt the Dragon Ball style season system, by having 100+ episodes and then moving on. I always hate when dan overreacts during these. It's just a game. Though I get frustrated I don't scare.

  • Great episode of Replay! Dan, you make me laugh hysterically. I can't wait for season 2!!
