The lights are on
The manufactured Battlefield 3 vs. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 rivalry may have dominated headlines, but gamers had plenty of opportunities to get behind the ironsights in 2011. From the creative, under-appreciated entries like Bulletstorm and Crysis 2 to the big guns like Gears of War 3, we had no shortage of quality options for shooting virtual enemies in the head. But which games stood out the most? Read on to find out.
Best Story Campaign: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
The Call of Duty campaigns typically have incomprehensive, continent jumping plots that prioritize jaw dropping set pieces moments over character development, and Modern Warfare 3 is no different. Though the campaign still leans heavily on the Call of Duty 4 mission template (like nearly every other modern shooter), the Russian plane crash, sandstorm mission, and Juggernaut suit powered finale were each quality water cooler moments that stood above the moment to moment action of typical shooter missions.
Best Cooperative Mode: Horde Mode – Gears of War 3
In Gears of War 3, Epic Games makes its influential Horde mode even better by taking a page out of the tower defense game playbook. With barriers, turrets, sentries, and decoys at their disposal, teams can fortify their position like never before in the quest to survive the increasingly menacing enemy waves. This is cooperative gameplay at its finest.
Best Multiplayer: Battlefield 3
How do you retake the multiplayer crown? By re-introducing 64-player battles on wide-open maps filled with jets, tanks, and squads of teammates coordinating to capture control points. The web-based interface remains a point of contention for many PC players, but you can't beat the thrill of Battlefield 3's large-scale warfare. Console players are stuck with smaller, 24-player versions of these maps, but the drastically improved progression system and team-based gameplay still offer plenty of reasons to re-enlist for one more match.

Battlefield 3 is honestly better than MW3, but who am i to argue with pro game journalists?
Great list and I agree with most of it!
Nothing for Killzone 3, Crysis 2 or Resistance 3? Tsk, tsk. This might as well be called the "Call of Duty and Battlefield awards". Considering there were seemingly hundreds of FPS (and third person shooters - I forgot that Gears 3 won something on the first page) that came out this year, that's incredibly sad and ignorant of you, Game Informer...
But too bad te battlefields lobby is terrivle so you can never play with friends
MW3 rocks (BF3 fans are crying right now)
I say the overall winner is... none of them.
See, the whole competition here is "Which one made the most somewhat original ideas." And with FPSs... They all seem to be copying each other.
Now I don't hate FPSs because they're too mainstream. No. I'm the type of person who just plopped down 75% of their Christmas money for a used import copy of Mother 3. FPSs just aren't my most respected genre.
As a fan of both franchises, I have to disagree with COD being shooter of the year. I have never played a shooter with more beautiful maps, excellent team play, or diverse options for style of play as is available with BF3. COD is great, don't get me wrong, if you're just looking to pop in a get some arcade style action. Battlefield is just so much more immense and nuanced, it makes for interesting battles. I haven't played the single-player campaign on either game (as I'm sure is the case with a large portion of gamers), but even if they were terrible, it wouldn't matter as long as the multiplayer is entertaining.
That being said, most of my friends who bought COD upon release have recently bought BF3 (Christmas) and seem to be enjoying the change of pace it offers. Some have said that it's too big, and you just run around forever looking for enemies. I think it's a matter of preference. Some people enjoy to run-and-gun style of COD, others like to carefully plan attacks and have the options of foot/ground/air. To each his own...
TRUE WINNER: SKYRIM!!!
I mean I would rather have a sweet Daedric bow with added fire damage than a MK14 any day.
Not really all that surprising. I think it just makes reviewers look very silly when they call out games on being redundant and then give them rave reviews. Not saying MW3 is a bad game, but all the same it's very much so been there done that. Im glad Bulletstorm made it to the list, awesome game.
Honestly it's all about preference. But I've lost a lot of review sites credibility in the last year because of things like this. If I recall the GI reviews call the game "fresh enough" not verbatim but in a nutshell where is you look at Gears or BF3 compare them to their sequels and then say wow...they really have expanded/improved/added upon previous mechanics yet there is COD who has done surprisingly little. Elites pretty cool though I have to admit, and if they release as much content as they claim that they will be the 50$ a year might not be too bad, that being said with incorporation of online codes I'd say just about everyone is guilty of it now.
So Gameinformer how much logical sense does it make to give a game shooter of the year if you have even said yourself that is a very familiar experience, and not in a good way either. You'll always have games that have a if its not broke then don't fix it approach, but Call of Duty is not one of those exceptions.
(If its not broken dont fix it, Need for speed was "fixed" now its a lousy series, except Hot Pursuit but thats more BUrnout then NFS)
I agree with just about every bit of this entire blog/article.....with the exception that I like Kargh Island and Siene Crossing a little bit better than Caspian. lol That's just a matter of opinion, I know. MW3 definitely has a better campaign than BF3, but I love BF's mp! Plus Spec Ops modes easily outdoes BF3's co-op. My copy of BF3 won't let me get past half the campaign because some stupid glitch, keeps kicking me out of the campaign. I hate EA for their lack of polish on games, and also their lack to fix these games after they know about all the problems. Gears of War 3 mp and horde mode are awesome, as usual!
Yay!!! Call of Duty wins again!!!
I agree for call of duty for shooter of the year because it offerd a all around better package than battlefeild 3. Even though I favor BF3 multiplayer, Mw3 offered more offline features (i.e. spec ops, splitscreen and a fun singleplayer) while bw3's caimpain was lacking in the fun and co op was pretty bad. Also there are alot more people without broadband access than some people think. So kudos to all the studios for making Mw3
Cool Cool Cool. can't wait to pick up my copy of Bf3, I also find it really funny that after cod won shooter of the year(btw congrats) the cod regulars on this site are still giving there same useless points about how cod is almighty and above all games. LMFAO!!!!! stupid turds.....
i feel as though these awards were inherited and need not have been said
I CAN'T BELIEVE GUNDAM CROSSFIRE WASN'T ON THIS LIST! ITS THE GREATEST PS3 EXCLUSIVE EVER, AND AN AMAZING SHOOTER! WTF NOW I JUST ABSOLUTELY HATE YOU GI STAFF! YOU GUYS ARE ALL STUPID AND DUMB AND ANYONE WHO DOESN'T LIKE GUNDAM CROSSFIRE ALSO SUX MAJORLY. :) (am i joking?!?!?!?!?)
No! the Best Graphics picture is a photo! not a Gameplay shot! BF3 is actually an incredible game
Wow this is such a flawed idiotic list, how does MW3 win best Campaign, that was such an idiotic forced campaign, Battlefield 3 was bad,but gears 3 was Great, How does Cod win with only 1 Award, Wow Gi you seriously need to implement logic into your lists next time, and calling cod a "balanced game" that "innovates", wow logic isnt a requirement to work at gi
I respect there decision and understand why they would pick MW3; It has a rabbid fan-base and (in my opinion) is one of the most refined and polished games out on the market to date. There may be a lot of COD haters out there, but you have to give the creators of the game some credit; after all, how do you think it got such an enormous fan-base in the first place?
