The lights are on
The manufactured Battlefield 3 vs. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 rivalry may have dominated headlines, but gamers had plenty of opportunities to get behind the ironsights in 2011. From the creative, under-appreciated entries like Bulletstorm and Crysis 2 to the big guns like Gears of War 3, we had no shortage of quality options for shooting virtual enemies in the head. But which games stood out the most? Read on to find out.
Best Story Campaign: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
The Call of Duty campaigns typically have incomprehensive, continent jumping plots that prioritize jaw dropping set pieces moments over character development, and Modern Warfare 3 is no different. Though the campaign still leans heavily on the Call of Duty 4 mission template (like nearly every other modern shooter), the Russian plane crash, sandstorm mission, and Juggernaut suit powered finale were each quality water cooler moments that stood above the moment to moment action of typical shooter missions.
Best Cooperative Mode: Horde Mode – Gears of War 3
In Gears of War 3, Epic Games makes its influential Horde mode even better by taking a page out of the tower defense game playbook. With barriers, turrets, sentries, and decoys at their disposal, teams can fortify their position like never before in the quest to survive the increasingly menacing enemy waves. This is cooperative gameplay at its finest.
Best Multiplayer: Battlefield 3
How do you retake the multiplayer crown? By re-introducing 64-player battles on wide-open maps filled with jets, tanks, and squads of teammates coordinating to capture control points. The web-based interface remains a point of contention for many PC players, but you can't beat the thrill of Battlefield 3's large-scale warfare. Console players are stuck with smaller, 24-player versions of these maps, but the drastically improved progression system and team-based gameplay still offer plenty of reasons to re-enlist for one more match.

well I think BF3 should of worked on there single player campaign more, great multi player. Dice should of balance the two out!
Graphics well it would be between Rage and BF3, put those games side by side! Rage has excellent AI! IGN gave a 10 for rage on graphics!
Caspian Border for map of the year???? Usually I could care less about lists but Caspian border SUCKS!
Don't agree with it, but whatever. Nice year for all sorts of games.
I didn't get the MW3 campaign lol i don't mean to sound like a hater, i like the multiplayer but the campaign...well...i still don't know why Makorov is a bad guy, and it kind of felt like most of the time i had to shoot some guys, move along, then shoot some more guys and move along, once in a while getting blast in the face by something. I never played MW2, so mabye im not getting the full story. But yah, the campaign was very boring for me lol.
*** call of duty. gameinformer is biased.
Excuse my french... but you all are *** retarded.
how did gow3 only get one award
Let's all be totally honest: only a couple people actually bought BF3 or MW3 for the single player campaign, and the rest got it for multiplayer. They are both good games, but imo, Battlefield 3 multiplayer is much less repetitive and the details put into it far outweigh MW3. On the contrary, MW3 had little changes to their multiplayer experience, used the same engine, and even used some of the exact same weapons from MW2, which honestly made it feel like a $60 expansion pack rather than a coup de gras to what was the standard in fps gaming.
Like I said, although both are fun, Dice put in much more effort and were much more innovative in their product, which is why BF3 is my #1 fps for 2011.
Yes MW3 should have won best story and game of the year cuz its had a huge effect on us for the last few years. BF3 and what they did with it is great. They did it right with how BF got best multiplayer cuz mw3 is just shot and move on and theres always some guy who destorys the other team. in BF3 its all the same no one really as the upper hand in multiplayer and the map is amazing and also where else do u get to fly jets and drive tanks other then BF3?
I've played all of these and have 3 of them. I agree with all of these results. But I hate it when people say that CoD is better than Battlefield because frankly, I see them as two completely different kinds of games. Battlefield is primarily for large maps and strategy. Call of Duty is more for the action packed run-and-gun that I along with almost every other gamer loves. But I also have developed a passion for Battlefield since the first one that I've really gotten good at, Battlefield 3, came out.
So let me get this straight you give Battlefield the best review but you say MW3 is better? I'm confused.
Why didn't dead space 2 get on this list?
i agree for the most part with these honors. i love horde mode and agree that battlefield 3 has the best multiplayer. but best campaign could of gone to others not mentioned, and maybe forgotten in the never-ending cod/battlefield war. rage, dead space 2 and deus ex all had engrossing and intuitive campaigns, not to mention gears and its "epic" campaign (no pun intended). I feel like these campaigns should have been considered over call of duty's, which was short and delivered cheap thrills, something we have all come to expect from a cod series whose strength is multiplayer. 2 out of 3 ain't bad, i guess
Can I point out that Battlefield 3 looked great on PC while it left a lot to be desired on console. Crysis 2 which was made for console looked much better and with little to no framerate drop.
if preference to a better game or operating system makes a person a sheep, then all i have to say to that is "bahhh!"
