The lights are on
The manufactured Battlefield 3 vs. Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 rivalry may have dominated headlines, but gamers had plenty of opportunities to get behind the ironsights in 2011. From the creative, under-appreciated entries like Bulletstorm and Crysis 2 to the big guns like Gears of War 3, we had no shortage of quality options for shooting virtual enemies in the head. But which games stood out the most? Read on to find out.
Best Story Campaign: Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3
The Call of Duty campaigns typically have incomprehensive, continent jumping plots that prioritize jaw dropping set pieces moments over character development, and Modern Warfare 3 is no different. Though the campaign still leans heavily on the Call of Duty 4 mission template (like nearly every other modern shooter), the Russian plane crash, sandstorm mission, and Juggernaut suit powered finale were each quality water cooler moments that stood above the moment to moment action of typical shooter missions.
Best Cooperative Mode: Horde Mode – Gears of War 3
In Gears of War 3, Epic Games makes its influential Horde mode even better by taking a page out of the tower defense game playbook. With barriers, turrets, sentries, and decoys at their disposal, teams can fortify their position like never before in the quest to survive the increasingly menacing enemy waves. This is cooperative gameplay at its finest.
Best Multiplayer: Battlefield 3
How do you retake the multiplayer crown? By re-introducing 64-player battles on wide-open maps filled with jets, tanks, and squads of teammates coordinating to capture control points. The web-based interface remains a point of contention for many PC players, but you can't beat the thrill of Battlefield 3's large-scale warfare. Console players are stuck with smaller, 24-player versions of these maps, but the drastically improved progression system and team-based gameplay still offer plenty of reasons to re-enlist for one more match.

I have every game on there except for Bulletstorm, and I've played every one of them pretty extensively. Battlefield 3 is hands down the best overall.
cod rules! good for them
i have all the games on the list-- Battlefield 3 is hands down the best game there in every way. It should have definitely won Shooter of the Year
What a GREAT year for shooters. IMO all the mentioned titles are great games and I have invested time in all of them. I am glad that RAGE got a nod for something! Disappointed KZ3 didnt make the list, I think it was sort of forgotten since it was released early in the year. To sum it up, I think KZ3 has the best online gameplay out of all the games.
yay Bulletstorm and Gears ^_^ Just glad they're on here (especially Bulletstorm; very under rated game)
I agree with most of the awards with the exception of two, Story and Best Shooter. I would have to say Gear definitely had a better story then the rest COD is the same crap. Also the best progression system is a lot closer than you made it sound. Bringing things into the argument like being able to save custom load-outs, and being able to change between matches. Um correct me if i'm wrong but BF3 you can change at time other then between matches. That drives me nuts in COD not being able to change my class in match. If you put a sight on a gun to try it out you have to wait till the match is over to change it stupid. I will say that BF3 campaign sucked I did not play more than an hour because it was not fun, but I think its Co-op gets over looked way to quickly. It was pretty solid and on harder difficulties very challenging. As far as best shooter goes I love BF3, but I think it should go to Gears it's a solid game with very few if any problems. Something that can not be said for BF3 or COD. In the end it really does not matter though I still have my game that I love to play and you have yours, so lets just enjoy them and hope for more in the future.
There will always be fanboys, and there will always be haters. Gaming is all about personal preference, and what a great time it is to be a gamer. All the competition in the market really benefits those who matter the most, the gamers!
Ugh.... *facepalm*... Crysis 2 had an amazing campaign, and so did Killzone 3 & Gears of War 3's campaign *** on MW3's campaign. I came into this article reading "2011 Shooter of The Year Awards", not "We Wanna Suck FPS Video Games Dicks Off in Hope of Next Years Re-Hashed Games We Get Some Recognition of Utter *** Awards".
Here - www.ign.com/.../best-of-2011 - these awards are actually worth reading.
I'm obviously upset because I expected more from Gameinformer on this, and suprisingly, IGN *** on them when it comes to who deserves the awards.
Battlefield 3 FTW.
cod deserves nothing. this is pathetic.. I expected better from you GI... you should be ashamed...
Wait...how can MW3 win game of the year when really the weight of what is great is in favor of BF3? I mean sure MW3 has a good story but that is all it has. BF3 story is okay and in fact amazing that a BF game had a story that wasn't so bad as BF2's...which in fact never did have until it was moved to Console horribly.
Now I am a BF3 supporter as I have more fun in that game than any of the COD games...the Zombie thing has gone overboard in my book. Still as I see it you picked it and it is your choice. So we can argue all we want but won't change your mind.
oh no! bf3 got more awards than mw3?
prepare yourselves my friends, A war in the comments are coming...
lol mw3 lost best multiplayer not on one side though
