Crafting The South Park RPG

Feargus Urquhart loves RPGs. As the lead designer on Fallout 2 and one of the founders of RPG-centric Obsidian Entertainment, Urquhart and the rest of the team are not approaching South Park: The Game as a simple licensed title. A lot of thought is going into the challenge of creating a light-hearted experience that's enjoyable for fans of the show but also appeals to fans of Obsidian's deep RPG heritage. We spoke with the CEO of Obsidian Entertainment about how the South Park project began, working with the wildly creative minds of South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker, and how the team at Obsidian is approaching the opportunity to create a massive 2D RPG based on one of the most successful animated shows in history.

  • Swearing, children dying, and a massive 2D RPG... F-YA!
  • I'm actually interested.

  • not obsidian they gonna ruin it just like new vegas and alpha protacol

  • Mod

    koo!

  • I think bethesda should've takled this one, the only good game Oblivion ever made was KoTOR2 after that they went downhill
  • Hmm, South Park, a 2D RPG? Sounds risky.... but if it works it could be considered an extremely creative attempt and be praised highly for its ingenious idea. Consider me curious.

  • This sounds really interesting.  Can't wait to read about it in the issue!

  • "Who are we making this for?" - that's Obsidian's problem right there. I've heard multiple developers, including Ken Levine, instead say they create games they themselves want to play. There hasn't been an Obsidian game that has drawn me in, but maybe this will be the one.

  • their last two games have been rocky but for tech issues mostly. it sounds like they wont be having to deal with that this time with SP's simplistic art design. im very excited for this i hope matt and trey stay closely connected to the project and make it as funny as possible

  • I love south park! I hope this game is really worth keeping up on!

  • Dude silent kill I think your forgetting that kotor 2 was only good because of how great kotor 1 is, other than that I totally agree

  • yeah because they handled new vegas so well
  • This game will be epic because i love south park and anything south park is worth the money

  • Wow, they are taking this game pretty seriously, lol.

  • I'll be buying this

  • no. just no.

  • This is on my radar big time. but I'm having a really hard time imagining what it might be like. Hopefully the GI article can dispel that.

  • this is dumb.

  • Just add this to the quickly growing pile of Obsidian trash.

  • 2d Rpg? I hope it's like Dragon Quest or the early Suidokens and not like 2d sidescroller rpgs like Valkyrie Profile 2 for the ps2.  Please not like that.    ...Not that it was a bad game, it just turned my world upside down and i have still yet to finish it despite the fact that I can hear it calling me from the Box of Forgotten Video Games.
