A Look Back At Link's Awakening

With our month of celebrating the Zelda series, we wanted to take the opportunity to look back at one of the best entries. The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening, the franchise's first handheld title, is remembered fondly by many... and then there's Game Informer's Dan Ryckert. Watch the video to see highlights (and plenty of spoilers) from the game while Ben Hanson and Jeff Cork try their best to convince Dan Ryckert of the error of his ways. The conversation shifts from a debate between the superiority of Link to the Past or Link's Awakening to an overall discussion of the power of nostalgia within the Zelda series.

  • why do people compare games that came out 20 years ago to a game that is coming out today. Almost always, the 20 year old game comes up on top, usually because of how "nostalgic" it is. Seriously, the game that is coming out today is better. Quality>nostalgia.
  • Old games are the best games. imo.

  • I liked Link's Awakening but I'm stuck on the 4th dungeon....
  • I don't think a game is better simply because it's newer. The old 8-32 bit classics are still high quality games. Your dumb if you think otherwise. An "outdated" game is often better because it did EVERYTHING well. With fewer bugs useless filler.
  • Love, Love, LOVE this game. Doesn't get nearly enough credit.
  • This is my favorite game of all time. If anyone has anything bad to say about it, I will punch them in the throat.
  • I could see where Dan was coming from, until he said Link's Awakening was one of the worst Zeldas. I just played it for the first time a year or two ago, and I absolutely loved it.

If I had to argue what some of the worst Zelda games were, Spirit Tracks, Twilight Princess and Phantom Hourglass would easily be below Link's Awakening.
  • I acually only played Link to the Past on GBA but it was great and unique, loved that game.

  • Dan's stuck in the past...I played the FIRST Zelda last year for the first time, and it was HORRIBLE...no way it can be won without a walkthrough. Link's awakening was great but not nearly the best
  • I've never touched a Zelda game cartridge before; I'm really excited about Skyward Sword's release.
  • how the hell do you get stuck on link to the past it is probably the most straight forward zelda game made...
  • Link needs a gun
  • Wait, I played awakening only a few years ago and there was no nosalgia for me [I only played the first one and minnish cap of the 2d ones a his point]. Loved it absolutely. Probably my 2nd fave zelda.
But I don't get the story hate, it's not some dream twist, it's a moral dillemma. they tell you ahead of time your stuck in a dream, but tell you waking the wind fish is the only way out. But if you do, Koholint comes to an end. that's a heady premise for an 8bit title.
  • This is my favorite game of all time. If you want to see my whole rant, look at the first post on the Reader Discussion thread, I am not going to bore you all by copy pasting it.

But cereal. I love this game so so much.

  • A lot of folk think that it was just a dream. It all happened for reals. Like Inception!

  • I have never actually played more than a few minutes of any zelda game.  A few hours in Ocarina maybe.  I will volunteer for the experiment.  lol.

  • I have so much nostalgia for Link's Awakening. One of the first games that i played, and one of the first games that made this guy (points thumbs to self), a gamer.

  • Also, in addition to the Windfish flying overhead at the end making you question whether or not it was all a dream, if you beat the game with 0 deaths on your save, after the credits roll you will see Marin turn into a seagull and fly away, just like she told you she wished she could do on your beach date.
  • In response to that whole "start someone on the zelda series" thing, my friends always thought i was insane, being in love with this series. just started one of them on the original, and so far he's loving it

  • Link's Awakening is king.
