The lights are on
While it was undoubtedly inspired by Resident Evil, Silent Hill managed to offer a completely different breed of fear than Capcom's mega-hit. Rather than relying on jump scares, Konami's series was more about instilling a constant feeling of dread. Whether it was from the suffocating fog that plagued the town or the constant static from your radio, something was always there to remind you that things weren't right. Over a decade later, we decided to pop it in to see if it could still make our skin crawl.
Watch below as Tim, Reiner, Jeff Marchiafava, and myself replay the original Silent Hill.

ROGUE SQUADRON if you haven't done it already.
definitely. one of my fave games. glad to hear i'm not the only one who liked sh4 also.
Ah the first Silent Hill...the creepy streets, the chilling noises on the radio, and the deformed dogs and monsters...All bring back memories when i used to watch my brother playing this game...
but IMHO i think the second installment is way way better.
It had a certain appeal to it and the analogy of the Jack The Ripper was awesome...
You guys should Replay that title as well...
I remember watching my brother play this game. It was kind of scary or at least unsettling at the time. Not so much now. I like when Tim destroyed the demon dog with a pipe. It was pretty satisfying to just watch that.
I liked The Room, too. Not my favorite SH, but it was definitely an interesting game to play.
I think the original held up pretty well. They went for atmosphere over visual cues for the scares, so that helps in the long run (same reason the original Texas Chainsaw is one of my favorite movies).
The overall creepiness is rather diminished when you play it with a group of people, though. Playing solo in a dark room with the sound cranked is the best way to go.
Awesome Replay, and you guys got me excited for the Super Replay. I think last weeks was my least favorite of all because of the sound track messing up, but this week was a hilarious redemption!
i am so glad that i didnt buy judge dredd that one time i saw it at gamestop
that noise happens to me sometimes when I'm playing Fallout 3.
I'm still waiting for the next silent hill. The franchise nails its gameplay like no other.
This was the worst replay you guys have done...
so I just saw a gameplay video trailer for silent hill down pour on youtube the game looks like it plays very well I think silent hill as a series could make a come back with downpour
reminds me of a more manly version of the diehard trilogy, ps1 collection's die hard 2 portion... also less working well abilities
Good job Reiner, we all heard the words "Galerians Super Replay" slip out of your mouth. oh well, thats the one I wanted anyway
Silent Hill is a series that I only recently got into. I had played the original Silent Hill on Playstation, but never got into it. It wasn't until I was able to check out Shattered Memories did I really get into the series. I enjoyed it so much actually that now I consider it a favorite game of mine. Now I want to play the other titles in the series to see which I like the best.
Listening to how the guys were talking about how close it was to Resident Evil made me realize that sure, yeah, that totally makes sense. Certain elements do appear in a survivor horror-style video game. But isn't that o.k to mimic another franchise but still create a different kind of creepy feeling?
All of this makes me hope that the Silent Hill HD remakes coming out just make all the chills and the exploration that much more fun to play.
