The Gun Peddlers Of Pandora

A massive variety of weapons was one of the primary selling points of the first Borderlands, touted in ad campaigns as featuring “87 bazillion” guns. While the game may not have actually invented a new unit of measurement, there certainly was a ton of unique weapons with a wide variety of attributes and functions. If you looked at these guns within your inventory, you’d get to see which manufacturer made them. Despite the inclusion of these brands in the first game, they never really had a distinct personality. With Borderlands 2, Gearbox wants each manufacturer to have a distinct visual ID and clearly-defined characteristics. Read on to learn about some of Pandora’s primary gun peddlers.

Bandit

Anyone who played through the first game is familiar with the bandit foes (hell, a bandit is even the primary focus of the box art). In Borderlands 2, these troublemakers have started putting together their own weaponry. They’re not the most organized or mechanically inclined group, so their selection will be notably ramshackle. Instead of a scope, a Bandit sniper rifle might feature a glass bottle. Instead of iron sights, a screw. On the plus side, Bandit guns feature the largest magazines of any manufacturer, though the increased size leads to longer reload times.

Dahl

Borderlands certainly sticks out from the crowded FPS marketplace, but Dahl’s weapons should feel familiar to fans of modern military shooters. These weapons will resemble more realistic gun designs like the firearms from series such as Call of Duty and Battlefield.

Hyperion

Even if you don’t remember the Hyperion name from the first Borderlands, you know their visual style thanks to a certain robotic buddy they happened to manufacture. Yes, Claptrap’s clean yellow-and-white design is a trademark of the weapons dealer, and their guns will feature the same look.

Vladof

These weapons carry a distinctly Russian vibe, with similarities to the ultra-common AK-47. This being Borderlands and all, it wouldn't feel right to not have at least some silliness present. That's why all of Vladof's weapons will have minigun barrels as attachments. In terms of stars, this brand boasts the highest fire rate out of any of Pandora's weapons.

  • WOW it won't let me go to page 2.

  • i think i will mostly collect bandit guns... and the others too

  • I always thought that the Hyperion trademark was the metallic red.  I guess it makes sense to switch the colors over to yellow and white.  They DID make everything else in that color, after all.

  • No ATLAS?

  • there are to many good games coming out near the same time.

  • This made for interesting reading... and did anyone else get Perfect Dark flashbacks after reading the Tediore entry?
  • my favorite brands were maliwan and jacobs. however, i have to admit that alot of guns felt the same. im glad this time around gearbox is gona make every weapons manufacture distinctly different.

  • I wanna show all my haters love

So I'd wave to you like

    Good Mornin

    Ha- ha- ha- ha- haters

    Good Mornin

    Ha- ha- ha- ha- haters

  • Looks like S&S and Atlas got axed. Luckily good old Maliwan is still there.

  • I love the look of the Tediore guns... they're just... so... beautiful...
  • Wow sounds like vladof will be my favorite I love assault Rifles with high rates of fire. On a side note I hope they do something about the weak rocket launchers on the game in the first it seemed like no matter how good the stats were for the launcher it was still super weak.

  • I'll definitely be picking Tediore.  Using a rifle specifically designed to explode just sounds awesome.

  • I have to say after beating the game 4+ times (once with each character)I could easily tell the difference between gun manufactures. Guns shot differently. I hope with all of these comments about Atlas and S&S missing they will be brought back. But with the introduction of the Bandit guns you might not see S&S, which I believe was the manufacture with the largest clip size? Let's not forget about the rare candy that was "GearBox" guns like the Rider. I hope to see an update to this article if GI gets more concept art for the other manufactures, but I understand they may only gotten concept art for these two so far. I personally just bought the GOTY edition on PS3, I already own the a copy on 360 and PC. I can't wait for BL2. And I think GI is doing a great job of making me stalk my mail person until I get the next issue.

As a side note, someone commented about they didn't want to see only certain types of guns coming from certain manufactures. Correct me if I am wrong, but wasn't that the case in BL? I don't remember ever getting a Jacobs SMG or Combat Rifle?

And want about the Eridian weapons? Did the alien race and their weapons disappear after the vault was opened?

Right now I am looking forward to the Bandit guns and Vladof, but I think it's too earlier to tell. It's at least 13 months away.
  • umm, where are the atlas guns?

  • Very Nice, I always liked how borderlands had brands of guns.

  • I'm a Hyperion man myself. Perhaps because I've always used that word as the name for my Sniper class whenever a shooter lets you name custom classes.

  • Borederland 2 coming out

  • hey does anyone here know how to blog

  • ah yii, I can't wait. I have never been looking forward to april fool's day as much as I am now!

  • That's fairly awesome. That was one thing that bothered me in the first one, that every company felt too similar. Already know I'll probably use Jakobs for their sniper rifles. Will use Tediore no matter what, the concept of explode-rebuild is too amazing for words. And if I can track down a Vladof rocket launcher with a mini-gun barrel on it, so much the better. Can't frackin wait.
