Game Informer Editors Set Six Gaming World Records

Original Story: Last March, four of us set a Guinness World Record for Longest Fighting Game Marathon. We gunned for the Guinness book again this weekend, but one record wasn't enough this time. As those who watched the live stream know, we set up shop in the GI conference room and played all weekend until every one of us set a new Guinness World Record.

They're all marathon records, and you can see how long we spent on each below:

Dan Ryckert - Longest Mario Marathon . Total length: 50 hours. Completed all 120 stars in Super Mario 64, beat Super Mario RPG, beat Super Mario World, and dabbled in Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 2, Dr. Mario, Mario Kart 64, and even Mario Party.

Jeff Cork - Longest Grand Theft Auto Marathon. Total length: 50 hours. Completed Grand Theft Auto IV and The Lost & Damned, got a good chunk of the way through Ballad of Gay Tony.

Ben Reeves - Longest Stealth Game Marathon. Total length: 48 hours. Completed Metal Gear Solid 1, 2, and 4 without skipping any cutscenes. Spent several hours on Metal Gear Solid 3 at the end.

Bryan Vore - Longest RPG Marathon. Total length: 44 hours. Bryan had never played Oblivion, so he set the RPG marathon record by spending his first 44 hours with the game in one sitting. After learning the ropes, he took down the Fighters Guild, the Arena, closed an Oblivion Gate, and did a bunch of random side quests ending up at level 10. A bug forced him to revert to an earlier save and lose many hours of progress.

Phil Kollar - Longest JRPG Marathon. Total length: 34 hours. Phil felt he needed to spend some more time with the beast of an RPG that is Final Fantasy XII, so he figured he might as well set a JRPG marathon record while he's at it. He also spent a few hours playing Final Fantasy: Mystic Quest.

Tim Turi - Longest Survival Horror Marathon. Total length: 27 hours. Completed a knife-only run of the original Resident Evil, beat Resident Evil 5, and dabbled in RE 2 & 3.

It was a ton of fun, and the time flew by much quicker than it did during our Smash Bros. marathon. Being able to mix up games and play a variety of experiences really helped, and we're glad that every one of us set the record we were gunning for. Now if you'll excuse me, I've been awake for three days. I am going directly to bed.

  • I'm hunkerd down and ready to go!
  • i requested 2 days off from work for this! im ready to go :)
  • Lets DO IT! >:O
  • no chat this time?
  • I'd like to seriously just see a stream of Bryan playing Oblivion
  • i wish they had video of every game going

  • Which chat are they officially watching?

  • The top cam should be on the opposite side of the chair, to give us a view of the wall of televisions as well.
  • gooo' lack gaiz!!

  • I'm going to be gaming alongside the GI guys for this (metaphorical alongside, as I'm not there in their offices). I've decided to try and play through all of Two Worlds 2. I haven't played it at all yet, so this whole thing will be new to me. I'll be posting updates on twitter, @HutchUniversity if anyone is interested.

Update: Made it to 24 hours! Going to nap for a bit and then jump back into it. Me, the TV, and the XBox all need a break.

Most annoying thing about Two Worlds 2? When you pick a lock it doesn't automatically open the door/treasure chest. Why would I ever just pick the lock and not take what's inside?
  • Dan will you be bringing out the American flag pajamas tonight?
  • Why is there no sound?

  • Good luck you guys!

  • Why am i still watching this? :)

  • Godspeed to Ben Hanson, if he has to cut together a general re-cap from all 3 feeds later.

  • so who else is considering forgoing sleep to watch this whole thing?

  • I can't hear a thing.

  • -Star fox voice- Good Luck!

    EDIT:
Congrats for every GI member! Sounds like you guys put in a large amount dedication and it truly shows.

I hope you guys can keep your records for an eternity!

One last thing, can you describe how everyone left. Like did they fall asleep or just leave?
  • I'm rooting for you guys! Don't screw up! I'm also having audio problems. I can only hear Dan and Ben. I can't hear the Mario video at all. And will we be able to see any of the other videos at some point?
  • Good luck guys! btw, is the only feed we're supposed to hear Dan's feed? That seems to be the only one I can hear clearly.
