The Story Behind The Wii U And Darksiders II

With the announcement of the Wii U at E3 2011, Nintendo proudly showcased a video that had third-party developers heaping praise on the Wii U system and the unique properties of the touch-screen controller. Generic platitudes aside, we wanted to speak with developers about the actual process of getting their game up and running on the Wii U. The team at Vigil Games is one of the first studios to port their game to the new console, and general manager David Adams and technical director Colin Bonstead were two of the three main programmers that dove deep into the hardware of the Wii U. Watch the video to learn what it's like to code for the console, work with Nintendo, and what the Wii U controller will bring to your experience of Darksiders II.

  • When is the Wii U supposed to launch again? Really curious to see how this controller feels in my hands.
  • If they can actually port this game well, meaning it retains all of its good properties (graphics, fluid gameplay, etc.), then I may start looking into investing in the Wii U.
  • Schweet

  • haha in probably makes pancakes!!

  • I would not be opposed to a combination gaming-unit/breakfast-making device. SCIENCE!
  • Man they are making Darksiders 2 sound really cool on the Wii U.

  • In this day and age the ps3 STILL has *** ports, good to hear from a developers stand point that this wont be a problem

  • ....And it will still sell well below the Xbox360 an PS3 versions of the game because Nintendo fanboys don't support 3rd party games, and everybody else already has an Xbox360 or PS3--and they'll get the game there, where any online and downloadable features will be superior, and there are Achievements and Trophys.
  • in my mind the analog sticks are akwardly placed too high, curious to see how it will feel
  • This is definitely a must buy for the Wii U launch. I am disappointed that Nintendo did not show it at E3. I would have answered many of the questions and shown what Nintendo's goal is. I am really looking forward to this game. Thanks GI!
  • The Wii U should have came out in 2006.
  • The thing that gets me about the wiiU is that I still haven't seen a game on it. It sounds neat but all the tricks don't mean much until I see an actual game running on the hardware. Still unclear as to whether its more powerful than ps3 & 360 or on par with them. Its good to hear that its easy to develop for but I hope nintendo's idea of third party support encompasses more than just being a port dump with an inventory screen.
  • I really want the next cover story...this darksiders stuff has been going on for just a little to long.
  • hmm I wouldn't consider Darksiders a 'Real Triple A' game. Darksiders 1 although fun had some MAJOR FLAWS that God Of War the game they ripped off has perfected.
  • This sounds dope. I am excited for this system. It sounds like if developers put even a minimal amount of time and resources into utilizing the controller then I think Wii-U versions could be the way to go on games like Darksiders 2 and Aliens Colonial Marines and even further down the line with GTA V and Hitman Absolution. I have an Xbox 360 but achievement points and shoehorned Kinect gameplay doesn't beat how the Wii-U could improve a game. I honestly think the Wii-U is going to be a really good and durable platform. I will still get PS4 or the next Xbox but I think those two won't take such a big graphical leap this time. It will be more about online services, kinect/motion controls, and exclusives titles more than horsepower. Sure they will get better graphics but I don't think it will be so great that 3rd party developers can't make the same games for the Wii-U and with that controller I think plenty of people might opt for Wii-U versions of games if the controller is utilized in clever ways that improve gameplay.

  • have generaly high hopes for wii u only question with games like this 1 is will it come out late (the game) on wii u vs other 2 or will it be all at once n if its late why would i want to wait  i like the ideas they have for it tho but ya know

  • The controller could prove to be awesome. It looks weird, no doubt, but it seems like everything is in the correct place in terms of a "natural feel." It's just that you have this big screen in the middle. However, it's never in the way. Personally, I've always thought the Playstation analog sticks were in an akward position, because both of your thumbs are angled diagonally, so there's always an adjustment for something as simple as walking straight forward. You sweep your thumb to the left a bit, as opposed to pushing straight up, with the thumb in the 12 o' clock position (X-box360). That just made more sense. but hey, to each his own, right?
  • what does the wiiU look like again no one tells me anything
  • Dont forget the e3 showing was coming from xbox and ps3

  • dont think im gonna wait until late 2012 to play darksiders 2 on the wii u when I might be able to get it sooner on the xbox 360
