Battlefield 3 Producer Dissects The FPS Genre

The first-person shooter has grown to become a dominant genre in modern gaming. With so many studios cranking out shooters, creating a unique identity has become increasingly difficult. When checking out Battlefield 3 in Sweden, we asked executive producer Patrick Bach if he had any thoughts about the current state of the first-person shooter genre. "It's all I think about," he said.

Check out the video below to hear him talk about the roots and evolution of the genre.

  • I don't see the hype with this game, honestly. In what weve seen so far, there has been nothing new. Yes, the graphics are great, and the destruction is impressive, but this has already been done time and time again. Hope they can put a little innovation in there.
  • I questioned orignally what the new Battlefield brought to the table when i read the article in GI. I'm very excited but i was still concerned. I now realize that their goal is to make a game as realistic as possible and make it fun unlike Dragon rising game, you know the one.
  • Can't wait for this game, the guys at DICE are brilliant and I can't wait to see what they've come up with. The stories in their games aren't garbage, they look and play great. I just really hope we can get some new game modes and more maps shipped with the games. As much as I hate to say it, BF:BC2 got old fast with only two game modes and like what? Five or six maps? That's simply not enough when CoD has ten or eleven standard gamemodes, along with hardcore, and now they have the wager matches. Battlefield is a great series, I just want more ways to enjoy the worlds DICE creates.
  • Every new thing I hear of this series makes me more excited. Looking good BF3! Oh, I get shivers just saying it.

  • I don't understand all of the excitement about this game. Also I hate when a developer puts a lot of effort into PC because neither me or any of my friends own one because they are so freaking expensive. And because most PC games aren't that great anyways. But I do still support any good FPS so I will wait and see if it is good. I do love the COD and Halo style multiplayer but DICE hasn't had a single game with good multiplayer to me and they need to change that to win me over to any of their games. Anyways just my thoughts.
  • *blink* That was a fair amount of talking with little in the way of an outward message. FPS is popular because it's instinctual, ok cool...

FPS is always evolving; currently it is broadening to try and be different - no wait narrowing because we know what works. And we barely look to the competition, we're looking years ahead of them, but market our titles as a direct answer to the currently more popular franchise.

Not really a fan of flip-flopping on a single point so as to cover all your bases so to speak. Hope that group 1 only heard message 1, group 2 only heard message 2... pretty slimy.
  • Mod

I'll be sad when February is over.  Because so will these videos.

  • I dont know if its me but these videos have a horrible lag to them. I cant really enjoy the interview while it stalls on a scene for 1 minute.
  • Yes. I will buy this game. I like the multiplayer for BfBc2 w/Nam' and stuff but its multiplayer seems almost to slow or something. I will tell you though I think that Hill 131 (or whatever they call it) is by far the coolest map I have ever played on before, maybe I would like the multiplayer more if they: 1. didnt have the dumb respawn delay 2. added more ppl to the large maps 3. if my friends actually played Battlefield and not JUST CoD. Dont get me wrong but if I don't have a group of buddies playing the game too. I lose interest in it.. I've got like 3days into BFBC2 so it did something right. Second most played console series ive played next to COD.
  • annual releases don't get new engines ... this will be something no1 has ever seen before... this promises to be next-level *** ... hopefully this will push the CoD franchise to step their game up with new tech and come out with a real numbered sequel to CoD4 ... my only concern/skepticism as far as BF3 goes is how successfully they can pull it off for the consoles.
  • I for one would like to welcome our new FPS overlords.
  • Great video. I really believe that the FPS genre is in good hands with DICE.

  • its nice to know that there are game developers like this

  • well that's great that there making something else but that's as far as i'll go thay talk about BFBC2 and Medal of Honor both games were not all that and to make matters worse right after the games came out they were selling upgrades for the games...REALLY!!! Well there goes the Limited Edition you thought you were getting but EA has a bad rep on that and let's see what's next... im not going to hold my breath.

  • The reign of CoD is over.. everything comes to an end.  Where one comes to an end someone or thing will flourish to new heights.

  • I'd watch the video if only the player would be friendlier... :(

  • I really think this is going to be a great game. The reviews will be high, but this game's sales won't be able to match the new Call of Duty game. Not to say that COD is better, the series has gotten progressively worse since COD 4.

  • might be next call of duty.... Dice seems to know what they're doing... i hope it doesn't turn out bad.

  • It's interesting when he says they try to be years ahead of other FPS's. Where are the killcams, kill-streaks, and create-a-classes? Let's be honest; every FPS is still trying to catch up to CoD4.
  • I really hope they don't make helicopters with as little health as they had in Vietnam. I would take them down with M1911s. I like how they are in regular MP but i would rather they had weaker main gun or make it have an ammo meter. Alt Fire is the best with a friend as the Pilot to take out tanks so i hope that's back.
