Five Xbox Live Indie Games For The New Year

For $3 or less, you can get any of these awesome new independent games to usher in 2011.

December brought a happy surprise for fans of the independent games movement. Several of the best developers on the Xbox Live Indie service banded together to create their own Summer of Arcade-style event called the Winter Uprising, which has been rolling out throughout December. In many cases, these games are the second generation of titles for the service from developers, and the experience shows. We checked out all the games that released as part of the Winter Uprising promotion, and they're all impressive, but we’ve selected five that help to show off the breadth of unique genres and game experiences available, and included links to trailers for all five videos so you can check them out.

If one or more of these games looks like fun (trust us, they are), then we’ve also included links to purchase the games directly on Xbox Live Marketplace. Many of the games cost only a dollar, but if you’re feeling really cheap, they all come with free trials to get your feet wet.

Cthulhu Saves the World

The developer behind Breath of Death VII has returned with another old-school RPG with a twist. This time, that villainous spawn from out of time and space, Cthulhu, has emerged once again into the world. Unfortunately for him, he’s been robbed of his powers, and can only get them back by becoming a true hero. Cthulhu Saves the World has an ideal mix of classic JRPG charm and modern humor, with lots of fun references to Lovecraftian mythology thrown into the mix. The Dragon Quest-style battles are fast. The characters are amusing. The gameplay is clever. And the campaign is lenghty; the game takes between 5 and 10 hours to complete, so you’ll definitely get your money’s worth. Also, we couldn’t help but chuckle at this music video trailer. Then again, we're kind of dorks for the whole Cthulhu thing. Buy it

Crossfire 2

The first Crossfire game was a really good time, and its sequel ups the ante and wins big. For those not familiar with the concept, imagine something like Space Invaders, but your ship can teleport back and forth between the top and the bottom of the screen, engaging aliens from either direction. The fast pace, excellent music and visuals, and tightly wound gameplay experience combine to nail a strong arcade dynamic. As you play, you unlock points to upgrade your ship, introducing a customizable leveling system that you can work to maximize score. Your also constantly flipping back and forth across the screen to pick up ammo for your supershot, which can get you into a rhythm that destroys entire enemy waves in mere seconds. Everything about the game works like a charm, and you can’t argue with that zen-like vibe when a game like this gets it so right. Buy it

  • I can't say I'm excited, because the PS3 really doesn't have a lot of good downloadable games like the Xbox does. I mean, I would love to play some Trials on my PS3, and Flower really isn't fun after you play through it once, which only takes less than two hours. I do love the PS classics though. I have all of them.
  • A Sweeter new year, YES!

  • Cthulhu huh? H.P. Lovecraft would be proud.
  • I think it's probably a good thing that I don't have access to a direct Internet connection in this room and money.  Or else I'd be even broker.

    Broker, that's right.

  • I'm tired of buying new games for an xbox that doesn't even work. i invested almost $1,000 just to be addicted to stupid games, and i still have to buy another xbox? I'm done...
  • why did i use up my ms points on that crappy tilty bike game

  • So far I've had bad luck with the Indie Games releases. I wish Microsoft could have some better quality control, although the trials and player ratings do help a bit - but sometimes the trials are awesome, and the game is over/boring 20 minutes later.

Also, I recommend the Decay game, there are 3 parts so far and the forthcoming 4th part is the conclusion I believe. It's a point and click horror/adventure game, but the story/mood is pretty damned creepy. I can't remember how much they are, but the whole series is probably gonna cost $5-$10. Not bad for fans of the genre, even if some parts are pretty short.

  • I got ZP2KX right when I saw it out of excitement. But I really don't like it

  • I only know Cthulhu from South Park even though that's not his true origin. The problem with all these great games, downloadable or bought as a disk, is that there's too many! I got two new ones for Christmas, New Vegas and Red Dead, and I am thinking about buying AC Brotherhood with my Christmas money. BUT I've only just gotten my fill from New Vegas, I haven't even started Red Dead, Reach is still something I need to get back to (on the Forge of course), and I bought AC #1 a few weeks before Christmas. Not to mention the BioShock 2 campaign I still haven't beaten on Hard along with the unbeaten Halo Wars campaign. If you took the time to read this entire paragraph, the point is that there isn't enough time in the day to play all these great games while keeping active and getting great games such as the ones above. Sadly, video games is a definite number three on the list.
  • I'm thinking about getting an MS point card for $20. 15 of it will go to Vietnam, and the rest to Cthulu, Epic Dungeon, and Crossfire 2. They look awesome
  • hmmm might have to pick a few of those up...

  • Looking forward to the Cthulu game
  • That is one *** up cat!

  • I thought Cthulhu was 20 feet tall? Whatever. Are any of these games coming to the PS3?
  • Also, for the fourth time GI, the page links aren't working for me! Does the site not work well in Firefox or something?

  • They need to release the Cthulu one for PSN, seriouslly.

  • I had exactly 240 MS points in my account, so I had to decide between getting one game for 240, or three for 80 each. In the end I went with Decimation X3, Break Limit, and Epic Dungeon. Probably would have gone with Cthulhu Saves the World, but I think it's still not available right? At least is wasn't as of a couple days ago. I'll just have to buy that one as well at some point.

  • Cthulhu!

  • I already got Epic Dungeon, Asteroids Do Concern Me, Cthulu Saves the World, and ZP2KX. I'll probably get more later. I love Winter Uprising!

  • Love the Indies and the uprising. What is the deal with no achievements on any indies-MS charges extra for gamerscore? I wish that I didn't care at all but it bugs me and I would play plenty more indies if even 10 points were there.
