The lights are on
For this week’s Replay we dive into 1991’s genre mash-up Actraiser. Combining town management aspects and 2D side-scrolling action, the game offers a glimpse back to a time when games were less restricted to specific genres. Join Joe Juba, Tim Turi, Ben Reeves, and Replay newcomer Bryan Vore as they reminisce on this 16-bit classic.

theres this old and really obscure pc title called Combat Medic: Special Operations from 2002. Apparently my friend saw it on the $5 game shelf at wal-mart multiple times over the course of a few months and for whatever reason decided to buy it. I never played it myself but it sounded hilarious from the description, I think it would be a great choice for at least a roulette
you should replay tekken 2
I would like to see a replay of the first sonic game. Ya know, before it sucked.
This was such a great game. I didn't play it until long after the days of the SNES. I ended up playing it as a PC mod. I really enjoyed it even as dated as it was. I was always a fan of Sim City in the beginning and RPG games are my favorite genre, so of course the game was awesome to me.
I wish they would make a new version of this game.
Guys, that was awesome. Can you guys do some other games that have come out on Virtual Console recently that have gotten some love from old schoolers, like ActRaiser? I really don't think that the VC gets enough coverage in gaming press, and as a result, not nearly enough people play these games (how telling is it that the best sellers are always Mario and Zelda games?). And when no one plays these games, publishers won't put more on the service and we'll never get some of the classics we deserve. You guys think you can revisit some other games from this era?
I'll tell you this; Metal Warriors (Konami), Demon's Crest (Capcom) and Sparkster (Konami) are all INCREDIBLE, AMAZING 16-bit games. Also - like Actraiser - not nearly enough people have even heard of them, let alone played them. Tis a shame; if any great game needs exposure so that they may one day return on VC (or Microsoft's Game Room? I don't know the legalities involved there), it's those games.
Rocket: Robot on Wheels
if your looking to do a platformer on the 64 .... you should cover Glover!... it even rhymes
As if ActRaiser wasn't enough to get me watching, you throw in a bit of Incredible Crisis at the end. Awesome.
Honestly, you could have done an entire Replay segment on Incredible Crisis. The story of the Ferris Wheel minigame and how it was... localized... for the US is awesome. The music was great and the pop culture / movie references were a riot. I still own this game and play it on occasion, although I honestly haven't made it much past Taneo's storyline.
I humbly suggest Irritating Stick for Replay Roulette. I dare you.
And, oh... where's Superman 64?
it would be cool if you guys did the fallout games or duke nukem anything. threwout the day ill think off tons of games that would be cool to see then when im at my desk i can never remember. wtf
This game was/is awesome.
I'm nominating the first Syphon Filter...although that may frustrate you guys incredibly...I played on of the newer ones on the PS2 and they didn't change the control scheme in anyway and I think I spent an hour trying to get through the first part of the game...yeah I suck
@Who Wants To Know- I believe you were thinking of Messiah (made by Shiny), which featured a cherub.
I never played ActRaiser, but the sword/platforming sections remind me of Rastan, which was probably one of the arcade games that Joe couldn't remember the name of in the pizza joint.
BTW, I really enjoy this feature. Good work; keep it up.
That one was awesome. You should replay Tetris Attack. That was truly an addicting game!
Do Oddworld next!
You should play the E.T. videogame
I f*$kin loved this game. Great great memories
I gotta say I love these replays, especially when bad games are brought up. Anyways, I have a suggestion for a game. I believe it was PSOne, and it was some sci-fi, semi-platform game where you grabbed people and smashed them back and forth with some sort of lighting arm thingy.
(if anyone knows the name of this game tell me please)
I love replay, theyre funny and i get a history lesson on some of these games.
You guys should do Zelda and the faces of evil for the Philips CDI:)
I would say Alien Soldier but i don't think anybody knows what that game is, so i'm going to suggest Gunstar Heroes because they're basically the same thing.
