Under The Radar: Xbox 360 Titles Worth Your Time

Over the course of about five years, the Xbox 360 has racked up hundreds of titles in its library of games encased in hundreds of neon green boxes. The 360 has its hugely popular exclusive franchises such as Halo and Gears, and unfortunately like any other console, these games cast a shadow over their not-so-popular counterparts. That's why we decided to dig around in our vault and pick out a few titles worth checking out that you may have overlooked. Plus, a few extra Achievements never hurt.

50 Cent: Blood on the Sand

Blood on the Sand is the follow up to 50 Cent's unsuccessful first foray into video games, Bulletproof. What's more surprising than the fact that Blood on the Sand came to fruition despite the reception of the first game, was that it was actually fun. In this third-person shooter, 50 Cent and G-Unit put on a concert in a fictional Middle Eastern country where they're supposed to receive a diamond-covered skull as payment. Unfortunately it gets stolen by a militant group, and it's up to 50 and the gang to retrieve it (this storyline is so bad it's good). With a decent weapon arsenal and tight controls you'll have a great time blasting through anything that crosses your path, plus you can bring a friend in on the action for some good, clean cooperative fun.

Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts & Bolts

In Nuts & Bolts, the bear and bird duo crossover into next-gen territory in their first departure from Nintendo's consoles. Set eight years after Banjo-Tooie, the partners in crime discover Gruntilda's return to Spiral Mountain and are suddenly tossed into competition with the evil witch by the Lord of Games, who devises a series of challenges that will determine the victor. The prize: ownership of Sprial Mountain. The loser would be forced to a life of hardship at L.O.G.'s video game factory. This game deviates from the third-person platforming formula familiar to the series in place of a deep vehicle creation system. Build your own whip from scratch, then take it for a ride across massive open worlds to complete a solid variety of enjoyable missions. Once you're ready, you can compete in online matches and share vehicle blueprints with friends. Any fans of Banjo or loud-mouth Kazooie should give this one a look.

Tales of Vesperia

Vesperia marks the tenth mothership title in the Tales series, and though it doesn't necessarily break any new ground, and exploits every JRPG cliché in the book, it's still a worth-while, role-playing romp nonetheless. I'll skip the convoluted story summary and get straight to the fun stuff. The combat system takes a few cues from earlier installments of the series with simple, real-time battles that encourage use of different strategies, attacks and weapons to keep things fresh. In motion, Vesperia is a visual treat with its cel-shaded, anime-inspired visuals. Any fans of the series or anyone looking for a good old-fashioned JRPG will find something to like here.

The Club

The Club is a fast-paced, run-and-gun third-person shooter that's light on the narrative and heavy on the action. A group of wealthy figures were bored with typical bloodsport and decided to start an underground club, which essentially turns into Fight Club with explosives. Eight fighters are pulled from their everyday lives to participate in this intense, no-holds-barred experience that feels like a deadly racing game. Choose your favorite brawler and complete trials across six courses that have weapons strewn about for your survival. Player with the most points at the end of each trial wins, and points are awarded by different criteria so you'll have to employ different strategies. You can continue to rack up points and work on your personal best, or take your bloodthirst online and beat the crap out of your friends. Think you have what it takes to survive?

Tom Clancy's H.A.W.X.

Ace Combat goes all Tom Clancy in this well-executed flight sim. A squad of ace pilots join a seemingly harmless private military contractor after their tenure with the U.S. Air Force, however as expected this contractor has sinister ulterior motives. Combat sequences are visually impressive, dogfights and bombing runs are frenzied and chaotic, and to sweeten the deal, three friends can join you in the fray. The game operates on a leveling mechanic that allows you to unlock new jets and weapon loadouts for added replay value. If you've ever had even the slightiest interest in trying a flight sim, this is the way to go.

Kung Fu Panda

A movie tie-in game that's actually kind of fun?! That seldom happens, but in this case Kung Fu Panda is an entertaining title that you and the kids in your household will get a kick out of. You'll complete tasks and collect items as different characters, but primarily as the film's star, Po, in this cutesy beat-em-up. Keep in mind the game's length is the equivalent of watching the film twice, so though it may only warrant a rental, there's still some fun to be had. The kids will especially dig it.

Ninja Blade

Black suit? Check. Insane acrobatic ability? Check. More swords than any normal human being can actually carry? Check. Check. And check. Ninja Blade's protagonist, Ken Ogawa, can kill just about anything that crosses his path in Tokyo, and with style. If you can get past the abysmal voice acting, you'll get to perform grand feats such as taking down a giant worm using a motorcycle, helicopter rockets, a giant bus, and whatever else you can get your hands on, all in cinematic glory. Ninja Blade is wild, over-the-top, and worth some time if you're looking for a thrill ride.

Pure

In Pure you'll pull off stunts that will even make professional stuntmen quiver. You'll blaze through the sky on your ATV at high speeds while performing as many death-defying tricks as you can to earn points. Camera angles will shift depending on your current state to provide a visual perspective that will get your heart racing. Just be sure to keep your helmet on.

Scene It

Scene It is an adaptation of the DVD-based trivia game of the same name. This family friendly title for movie buffs can be used with the Xbox 360 controller, or the big button controller bundled with the game for more of a buzzer feel. If you don't feel like waiting around for Live's 1 vs. 100 scheduled events, this makes a fun alternative to outsmart your family members in a competitive environment. For even more entertainment it could be a good idea to put chores on the line. Loser does the dishes for a week.

Lost Odyssey

In this console-exclusive role-playing title, players take control of Kaim who has lived for thousands of years, and surprise, has no memory of his past in a world on the brink of a magical industrial revolution. JRPG fans take note, this game was created by the father of Final Fantasy himself, Hironobu Sakaguchi and as expected includes a traditional turn-based battle system that allows you to use items and cast elemental magic spells or utilize skills. While it does nothing new on the surface, its traditional components are executed incredibly well, and with the steady decline of old school JRPG's on the market, there's nothing wrong with that.

Mirror’s Edge

Mirror's Edge is pretty well-known in the mainstream space, however the future of this IP is not entirely clear since it unfortunately only sold about a third of what publisher's projected. This super stylish first-person adventure is incredibly unique and allows great freedom of movement as your character, Faith, quickly wall runs, leaps, slides and shimmies across expansive industrial environments. The game is short in length, but this title is unlike anything you've ever seen and definitely worth giving a shot.

Pinball Hall of Fame: The Williams Collection

If you spent a lot of time in your past hovering over pinball tables in your past, this one's a no-brainer. The Williams Collection offers 13 different tables to choose from with an infinite amount of credits. There is great variety in table design, the ball physics are impressive, the control scheme uses the shoulder buttons to simulate the bumpers, and you can even engage in tournaments with friends. This is probably the closest you'll get to a real table, and at a much lower price point.

Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood

Bound in Blood is the prequel to the original Call of Juarez and offers a true Western experience, exciting shoot-outs and classic duels, plus an engaging storyline following the McCall brothers and their moral, emotional transformation. There's plenty of action here to keep your trigger finger happy as you patiently await the release of upcoming Western, Red Dead Redemption.

This is just a small portion of games that didn't get quite as much lovin' as we think they deserve, so this is where you come in. Have you gotten a chance to play any of these titles? What are some of your forgotten gems for the Xbox 360? (If you don't have a 360, don't fret. Even though some of these are multiplatform, we plan on creating an under the radar list for other consoles as well. Pinky swear.)

Comments
  • No Red Faction: Guerilla? Really?

  • MIRROR'S EDGE is one of the best games of all time.  It has incredible art direction, style, & graphics.  They broke the mold & blessed us with something ACTUALLY NEW (instead of a bazillionth 'Call of Duty").  I give DICE HUGE thanks for this.  I WANT MIRROR'S EDGE 2 SOOOOO MUCH!  LOST ODYSSEY is also an art masterpiece as well as NINJA BLADE, BANJO KAZOOIE, TALES OF VESPERIA, & INFINITE UNDISCOVERY.  By the way, 50 Cent...are you serious???

  • I liked this article. I'm still looking forward to getting Banjo, Lost Odyssey, and Mirror's Edge; this was just a reminder

  • MIRROR'S EDGE 2 PLEEEEEAAAAASSSEE!!!!!!!!!!!

  • GI sucking up to the xbroke again
  • @ Waddle187: Completely agree with you, Guerilla is awesome and TOTALLY under the radar.

I actually have five of these games myself (Pure, 50 Cent, Mirror's Edge, Ninja Blade and The Club)

  • I agree with all of these. Well maybe for the 50 cent game. I have heard that it is actually a good game and what not, but do I really want to play as 50 Cent and the G-Unit gang trying to retrieve some blinged out skull? I don't think so.

  • Ninja Blade looks pretty cool.

  • Oh and if they do actually make a list of PS3 titles that are under the radar, they better put Valkyria Chronicles in there. I saw that game for sale for 20$ brand new at gamestop. That game deserves more recognition and respect than that.

  • Waddledee's right, Red Faction should've been on this list, but hey, it was a first time thing. Blue Dragon should've been on here, along with Civ: Rev, Saints Row 2, and maybe even The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena.

  • Vesperia is AWESOME. The characters are fun even if the story isn't and the combat is better than Symphonia. Lost Odyssey is also awesome, the story isn't that great but the dream sequences more than make up for it. Combat is a tad slow, but it's quite difficult because it locks your level, its like a slow version of FFX. Mirror's Edge is fun but frustrating, definitely worth checking out though. I have Banjo but I can't read the text cause its so darn blury. I thus didn't get very far due to a lack of voice acting.

  • I seem to recall a letter in the letters section of GI recently requesting something like this and you guys turning it down, or maybe that was another game magazine, but I'm pretty sure it was you guys, so does that make you guys hypocrites or not?

  • I agree with this list. especially mirrors edge. I turned a lot of people onto his game

  • I was really looking forward to H.A.W.X. but once i found out it was an arcade flight simulator I didn't get it. It's realism or nothing for me.

Lock On is the best realism combat flight simulator I have played yet.

Call of Jaurez Bound in Blood was good, I played the first a while back I liked it.

  • If this list had came out just a couple days ago, I would be screaming out that everyone forgot about Portal and how it is a masterpiece, but I guess it was meant to happen this way.

  • i kno so many ppl that think banjo kazooie is for small chilren, so eat it!

  • you guys should really do one of these for the Wii. im tired of hearing everyone whine about no games for the wii, when there are clearly good games out there. it might open a few eyes, and show that the Wii clearly has more than just shovelware.

  • and one for the ps3 at that. maybe there are some old gems out there that didnt get enough attention before the ps3's current hey-day.

  • and then after i post, i read the fine print at the end, saying they'll be making lists for the other consoles. i'll just call myself an idiot and be on my way =)

  • Once again really great list!
