E3 ’08: Resistance: Retribution First Details

had a brief chance to sit down and check out the new Resistance PSP title with a small group of other journalists, and what we saw looks pretty true to the Resistance series. Below is a laundry list of the most important details all of you want to know. The war against the Chimera just got personal.

  • Resistance: Retribution is a 3rd person action/adventure entry into the Resistance Franchise, and has been crafted from the ground up for use on the PSP
  • The goal is to capture the frenetic action and gunplay found in the original Resistance title.
  • Resistance: Retribution has a liberal checkpoint system, and uses streaming to cut down on load times.
  • Resistance: Retribution has been crafted on a 3rd generation PSP engine, which allows for more detailed character models, high resolution maps, specular lighting, new character skeletons and animations, and more enemy types at once.
  • The game provides a bridge between Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2, and will feature shared weapons, enemies, characters and story. Resistance: Retribution will also answer questions left unanswered by Resistance: Fall of Man. Examples include: What were the chimera doing after they occupied western Europe? Why did we never see any female chimera? What are the Cloven?
  • The story follows James Grayson, who finds his brother while clearing a Chimera conversion center. He is infected and in the process of being converted. Army regulations state that all partially converted humans must be destroyed immediately. In an act that scars him forever, Grayson shoots his brother. Grayson later deserts his unit, in order to act out revenge on the Chimera by targeting conversion centers specifically. He is later captured and tried for desertion and goes on trial with a verdict of death by firing squad.
  • Instead of perishing, he is given a second chance by the French resistance who want to use his expertise to gain access to resources needed to finish a serum that will stop the conversion process. He agrees to accompany them for his own reasons, primarily driven by retribution.

  • The player controls Grayson with the left analog stick, and direction is controlled with face buttons.
  • A yellow redical on screen tracks enemy movement within a framed window, and a quick tap of a face direction in any direction will allow the player to switch between multiple enemies. The team also incorporated the weapon ring system from the previous game, and a quick tap lets you cycle through your weapons in a crunch. The aiming system is intended to be accessible, but still appealing to the hardcore gamer. The team wanted to integrate the least amount of button presses possible.
  • Grayson automatically crouches near full and half cover, and the fire button will make him pop up to engage an enemy.
  • All weapons have a alternative fire mode, such as a shield activation when using the Auger.
  • The game features a hint system built into Grayson’s journal, that will clue the player into their goals and how best to take out particular enemies.
  • No vehicles are confirmed as of yet.
  • The game will feature a new and robust multiplayer, but the team is not talking about it at this point in time.
