E3 '08: Hands On With Silent Hill: Homecoming

irst off, I must come clean and admit that I have never played a Silent Hill game – which is a sin according to several of my friends. As a bit of a game purist, I won’t pick up the series until I have a chance to go back and play them from the beginning, something that currently ranks high on my to-do list. Still, I know enough about the Silent Hill series to get a feel for the new title, and it was everything I would expect; dark, eerie and disturbing. In the level I played through the main character was tasked with finding his brother Joshua in an abandoned hotel that seemed to absorb light at every turn. While running around trying to find parts to fix an elevator and move deeper into the belly of the complex, I came across what is known as Smog creatures. The armless beings staggered towards me at a slow pace, but if they got close enough to my character they would puff up their chest – which grotesquely ballooned out from inside their ribcage – and released a noxious gas from within. Their physical attacks were nothing to scoff at either, which I learned the hard way when I ran out of ammo and had to take them on closer than I was comfortable with. I did not have an extensive amount of time to play, but I can safely say that the game is doing its job well – I somehow managed to jump in a brightly lit room in front of an entire PR team.
