ail to the Chimp is an equal-opportunity offender, hilariously lampooning television and election coverage as well (and as often) as it does politics. Even if you’re not a particularly political person, it’s worth checking out if you enjoy good satire.
In Hail to the Chimp, the Animal Kingdom is reeling from a scandal involving the former King of the Jungle and a vegetarian restaurant. After being caught dressing up as a wildebeest to enjoy his greens, Lion is forced to step down in shame. Ten would-be kings step up to take his place, and the mudslinging begins. The various candidates compete in 16 different games to woo the clam vote, which is the constituency most easily swayed by such actions. The fact that they’re also one of the biggest voting blocs around doesn’t hurt, either.

Chimp is essentially a collection of minigames, with player and AI-controlled candidates scrambling to complete politically themed tasks. Some of the individual games might be a bit familiar to Mario Party veterans, but Wideload has done an admirable job of keeping them at least peripherally related to the game’s overall theme. For example, Front-runner has players running around the levels doing their best to pick up clams. Once collected, they must be deposited into each candidate’s respective ballot box. The first player to get 75 clams in their box wins. Hack the Vote is a race to be the first politician to break 10 electronic-voting machines, which fall into the playing field in regular intervals.
While the 16 games have fairly diverse goals, a common thread unites them—mayhem. The playing field is the definition of chaos, with characters constantly pummeling one another and doing their best to avoid deadly environmental hazards. One moment you might find yourself knocking a walrus senseless, the next you’re staggering around blindly with a beehive jammed over your head. And just when you think you’ve got the upper hand, the submarine you’re trotting across submerges, dunking you into the drink, or two-thirds of the level is filled with molten lava.
