t looks like Prototype – the game featuring a genetically mutated and shape-shifting protagonist – will no longer be including the ability to cooperatively play with a friend. In an interview with Team Xbox, Prototype Executive Producer Tim Bennison explained why the feature was cut from anticipated title.
“From its inception Prototype was planned first and foremost as a single player open-world/action game. Naturally, with Alex’s genetically mutated shape-shifting abilities, we started to explore what would happen if he were to sub-divide into two Prototype’s and what kind of multiplayer gameplay we could create around that concept. We’ve been looking at this potential multiplayer idea much more closely as Prototype’s development has been progressing, and while it’s a great concept and gameplay bonus, our conclusion is that we won’t be able to pull it off with the same level of quality and polish that we’re aiming for with the original single player story.”
To some degree cutting co-op play makes sense if Radical Entertainment wants to stay with the spirit of the title. But don’t dismay, Bennison is not ruling out co-op out of the roster for additional post-launch downloadable content.
“Post launch downloadable content is something we’re currently evaluating for Prototype from many different angles including multiplayer content such as co-op. Obviously we’re hoping that Prototype does well at retail and supports DLC and a sequel because we have a lot of creative room left to explore.”
If you are still down in the dumps about the announcement, we have some new Prototype screens to console you.
