Unlocking Achievements Part II

egardless of what you think of them, Microsoft’s Achievement Points aren’t going anywhere anytime soon. In the first part of our look at Microsoft’s Achievements system, we looked at points in general and called out a few trends that we’ve liked and disliked. Overall, we’re big fans of developers who try new things, like Project Gotham Racing 4, and have a little less love for those annoying multiplayer Achievements.

Whether you’re a veteran 360 owner looking for tips on what to play next or a newbie who’s not familiar with Achievements, here are a few games that are sure to help players boost their scores to the next milestone. That is, if you care about the points in the first place.

Here’s a sample of some games that are generous with their Achievement Points. For specific tips on how to grab some of the more elusive ones, check out xbox360achievements.org.

Arkadian Warriors
You can score 180 of this Xbox Live Arcade’s 200 possible points in a few hours.

Avatar: The Last Airbender
In about two or three minutes (the time it takes to load the game, play it and press eject), you’ll have 1,000 more points. It’s stunning, really.

Bionical Heroes
While it might not have a license as recognizable as Star Wars, Batman or Indiana Jones, Traveller’s Tales pulls plenty of personality out of these odd creatures. It’s relatively long, but it’s an easy 880 points.

BioShock
If the game wasn’t good enough on its own merits, it’s also an Achievement goldmine. You’ll have to play through at least twice to get all of them, but chances are you’d want to anyway.

Carcassonne
One of the most addicting Live Arcade games is also one of the most generous. You’ll get 200 points before you know it.

Cars
Even if you skip the annoying collectathon activities and the wonky Tractor Tipping events, you’ll snag 775 points when the end credits roll.

College Hoops 2K6
As with most of the games that end in “2K6,” you can grab all 1,000 points in a single game if you’re sneaky and you adjust all the gameplay sliders in your favor.

CSI--Hard Evidence
Slogging through this story-driven clickfest will net you 1,000 easy points. Use the hints with impunity—they may count against your score, but not the Achievements.

Dead Rising
As with BioShock, you’ll have to play through it a few times to grab all the points, but the game is so much fun you probably won’t mind. With 50 possible Achievements, you’ll hear that wonderful chime regularly.

EA Sports Fight Night 3
Step one: Turn off illegal blows. Step two: Knee your opponents’ groin. Repeat until you’re 1,000 points richer.

Fuzion Frenzy 2
You can get 675 points without venturing online. At that point, you’ll probably want to move on, anyway.

Geometry Wars Evolved
The last few Achievements will probably frustrate you to no end, but it’s a great (and profitable) palette cleanser between less-than-stellar games.

Gun
If those stupid difficulty-based ones stacked, you could grab all 1,000 points in a single playthrough. At any rate, this is a great excuse to check out one of the earliest underrated 360 games around.

King Kong
Play through the game, get 1,000 points.

Madden NFL 06, 07
If you don’t mind simming several dozen seasons, you can grab close to 2,000 points with these two titles.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance
It’s a blast with multiple players, and it’s also a great way to boost your score.

Meet the Robinsons
It doesn’t reinvent the 3D platformer, but it’s a decent game with solid level designs and varied gameplay. If you know a 10-year-old who you can pass the controller with, even better.

NBA 2K6
More fun with sliders.

NBA Live 06
If you’re a patient person, you can get 795 points without even playing a game. Just keep simming away, and eventually you’ll get those points.

NBA Street Homecourt
But, in case you’ve forgotten, games are meant to be played. NBA Street Homecourt is a blast, and you’ll grab a whole slew of points playing (yes, playing) through the career mode.

Ninety-Nine Nights
People either love or hate this kind of game. If you like mowing through enemy armies like they were blades of grass, you’re in luck—it takes a while, but this is a points goldmine.

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
Oblivion is as generous as it is lengthy. One of the problems a lot of RPG buffs had with the game was that a single character could simultaneously head up the fighter’s guild, thieves guild and mage’s guild. That kind of flexibility is a boon to Achievement hunters, though…

Open Season
It’s about as generic as can be, but it’s an easy 1,000 points. While you have to do some collecting, objects are easy to find and you won’t need a map. Where’s that 10-year-old kid when you need him…?

Puzzle Quest
After you get sucked into it, playing through the game’s lengthy quest mode will net you the maximum 200 points.

Spider-Man Friend or Foe
While you may not want to stick around long enough to grab all 1,000 points, it’s a quick and easy way to boost your score while dinking around with your favorite webslinger.

Surf’s Up
Skip the final collectathon, and you’re still up 950 points. Best of all the game’s actually pretty fun—it’s like Tony Hawk meets Kelly Slater meets a bunch of penguins. Whew.

One thing to keep in mind is that even though the drive to increase Gamerscores steers players toward a fair number of mediocre games, it also spurs people into trying games that they might not otherwise try. “I would never have dreamed of playing Guitar Hero before but the points tempted me to give it a go and well... I've never looked back,” recounts Xbox360Achievements.org’s Dan Webb. “I'm now a fully pledged rock star... Well, in my eyes I am, despite how ridiculous I look as I rock around my lounge with a small plastic guitar.”
