eah, yeah, we've seen it before. Super hot girl, pistols, acrobatics. So what seperates Wet from all of the other Tomb Raider wannabes? We chat with Wet Executive Producer Andre Emerson and Producer Aaron Blane to get the details about this exciting new action game, Wet.
Game Informer: So, I guess first off, who is Ruby?
Aaron Blane: She’s kind of the girl next story, but in more of a polluted, dirty way. She’s a no-nonsense, kick-ass chick, instead of a snobbish, high-society heroine. She’s the kind of girl who you’d definitely find watching a football game with you and questioning the calls of the referee. She’s cracking open a PBR with you and screaming at the television on why it was a bad call.
She’s almost like one of the boys, but at the same time we also wanted to give her a definite sex appeal. She’s graceful, she’s fluid, she makes things look easy. She’s running on walls vertically and horizontally, she’s sliding, she’s flipping. As well as while she’s doing all of these incredible acrobatics, she’s also firing and targeting enemies at the same time with the use of her dual pistols as well as her sword for close combat.
She’s basically a problem fixer. You pay her the right amount of money she may do a smash and grab favor for you. She may go loot for you. She may do an assassination. Ruby deals with shady people who may feel uncomfortable doing the job – she can do those jobs for you. Sort of like in Pulp Fiction – the Wolf. He comes in when they have a situation and fixes it. This is kind of what she is. She comes in and fixes it with her signature weapons. Her dual guns and sword. And she’ll be able to upgrade those weapons – dual shotguns, uzis, assault rifles and mini-crossbows.

GI: How long has the game been in development?
Andre Emerson: This one has been a slow burn. A year-and-a-half. We kept the team very small for a long time. We showed enough promise with the tech demo that we really got the studios confidence to let it simmer and not rush. The creation of Ruby? We didn’t take a 2D image of this beautiful woman and say, “How do we build a game around her?” Ruby was a byproduct of the vision for this game. When we said we wanted to create these types of moves, and this type of world, and this type of atmosphere – she was birthed out of the vision to do that. It’s really made it interesting for us, because we kept the team very small for a long time and were kind of hammering out each type of mechanic we were showing in the grey box sections, and the result has allowed us now to really focus on how do we bring our music and our art direction and our gameplay – how do we tile all of that together and have the proper ramping and balancing and whatnot. It’s been great that we’ve been afforded the time to really let this marinate.
GI: Who’s the team behind the game?
Blane: A2M - Artifical Mind and Movement, they’re based in Montreal. Their portfolio mainly reads licensed IPs with movies and television. They’ve done a Teen Titans game, Monsters Inc., Happy Feet, Scooby Doo. This is the first original IP for this company, and we have a very talented team working on this game. They’re pedigree goes back 10-15 years of industry experience, including an art director and game designer who comes from Ubisoft that did Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell, as well as Assassin’s Creed. So we’ve got key talented people working on Wet that have obviously launched these franchises, and decide to move to a different company and create what will be Wet.

GI: What does Wet mean?
Blane: It’s an essence. We really don’t have a meaning for it. It was a name that we felt stuck. It was one of those names that – like in films – you seem to remember. Wet was one of those names that summarizes what this game is about. It’s excitement. It’s high-powered action. It’s the fluidity of Ruby’s moves.
GI: Is Wet mainly mission-based?
Blane: It’s a story-based game. It’s a crime story written by Duppy Demetrius, who is the writer of the first five seasons of the hit TV series 24. If you’re familiar with the 24 series, there’s a lot of twists and turns and plot twists. This is exactly what its going to deliver – tons of double crosses and shady dealing with people that you simply can’t trust. The people who Ruby thinks she can trust just end up turning against her. It goes from her doing her job cause she’s paid to do what she needs to do and it ends up getting screwed in the end and now she’s out for revenge. We’ll reveal more details as the time comes.
