intendo’s Press Briefing this year was much different than in years past. Why? Because unlike in the last few years, both of Nintendo’s consoles – the Nintendo DS and Wii – are doing quite well. Not surprising, the conference began with Nintendo’s Reggie Fils-Aime stating, “My name is Reggie, and I am happy.” And he has reason to be. Both the Wii and Nintendo DS are selling well, and see no sign of slowing up.
While basically re-touting the same market-expansion numbers they spoke of at their recent gamer’s day, the hard numbers show that the company has sold 40 million DSs since the handheld launched. And Fils-Aime stated that the “Wii is poised to be #1 worldwide very soon. Nintendo is not a fad – Nintendo is the future.”

Currently, there are 60 titles available for the Wii and 300 for the Nintendo DS, and more than 100 titles are expected to be released for the Wii by the end of the year versus 140 for the Nintendo DS.
Then it was time for the reveals. First up, Nintendo finally showed the final version of the Wii Zapper. To be packaged along with some undisclosed Nintendo designed software, the gun will be priced as $19.99. This new peripheral will work in conjunction with Resident Evil: Umbrella Chronicles, Ghost Squad, and Medal of Honor. Reggie also announced that Medal of Honor for Wii will support 32 player multiplayer.
While there was no new Super Smash Bros. Brawl footage shown, gamers will finally get their hands on the game on December 3rd. Keep your fingers crossed this doesn’t slide into 2008.
Reggie then revealed official download numbers from the Wii Shop Channel. With over 112 games available, gamers have downloaded 5.6 million titles. The company plans on expanding the Wii Ware channel next year, but coming soon is a new channel called Check Mii Out. Users can vote on user-created Miis and take the ones they like. Nintendo plans on having contests surrounding it where users may create celebrities.
Reggie joked that people didn’t believe that Nintendo was supporting online gaming, and this year Pokemon, Super Mario Strikers Charged, Madden NFL 07, FIFA 08, and Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock with online battles of the bands.
The fan favorite Mario Kart series will grace the Wii next year with online multiplayer with racing and battle mode supported. However, they haven’t stated how many players will race online together (cough…eight). Packed in with the game will be a Wii Wheel.
Also, along side showing some new Super Mario Galaxy footage, Nintendo finally dated Mario’s adventure – November 12th.

The final reveal was the fitness title Shigeru Miyamoto had been hinting at for a while – Wii Fit. This new software will be packaged along side a pad called the Wii Balance Board that is pressure sensitive. With four genres of activities and over 40 activities including yoga, step aerobics, push-ups, and mini-games such as ski-jumping, and heading soccer balls. This Balance Board will measure weight, how balance shifts, and will be used as a new interface for games. The Wii Fit software will measure the Body Mass Index instead of spitting out your weight.
Surprisingly, that was it. No major explosions. No megatons. Is Nintendo banking on the expanding audience? Could be….
We’ll have much more on the playable Nintendo titles in the coming days….
