omorrow marks the launch of the PlayStation Firmware v2.40 update, which will bring some highly requested changes and anticipated additions to the console. Recently, the official PlayStation Blog outlined what we can expect to see at launch – including an in-game cross-media bar and the introduction of a trophy system. Read on for more details.
In-game XBM
Sony will be making the cross-media bar accessible in-game with the 2.40 update; something they explain was one of their most requested revisions. By pressing the PS button, the standard XMB will pop up on screen during play. The addition allows you to access the usual features without having to exit play. Now, you can check and respond to messages, navigate directly to different games, check downloads, and access a Google search bar by simply pressing a button. The update also lays the groundwork for a feature that will allow users to play their own music library while in-game.
Trophies
The PlayStation Blog also outlined the new trophy system, which will work similar to Achievement Points on the 360. Trophies are available in the bronze, silver, gold and platinum variety, with each type assigned a specific value. The values will contribute points towards your gamer level. The platinum trophies are unique in that they are only available after unlocking every other trophy in the game. As a reward for their difficulty, they will significantly contribute to your gamer level. Developers are only allowed to place a specific number of trophies in each game, depending on the scale of the project. We were assured that developers have the tools to patch trophies into existing titles, and that many will take advantage of the opportunity.
Trophies will be accessible via the XMB, where you can view the games you own that have implemented the feature. After selecting an icon, you can view what percentage of the total trophies you have achieved in that tile, and specifics about how to obtain the remaining rewards. The new trophy system requires a modification of the PlayStation Network profile. Now via your profile you will be able to check out your current gamer level and total number of unlocked trophies. You can also view a nifty little graph that breaks down your trophies into the four categories, and compare you achievements to your friends.
