ake-Two Interactive Chairman Strauss Zelnick told the Reuters Media Summit yesterday that he plans on growing Take-Two and Rockstar, and not selling it. This comes in response to industry analysts saying that Zelnick would plan on selling the company to a larger publisher such as Electronic Arts.
"I imagine we will try to find greater efficiencies but they probably won't be through headcount. I imagine headcount will grow. This is a growth business. We are in growth mode," Zelnick said.
Prior to his role at Take-Two, Zelnick had been known to turn around fledgling companies. Zelnick began his media career in film with 20th Century Fox, and then moved to music and headed BMG Entertainment. Take-Two isn't his first video game venture, and previously Zelnick was President and Chief Executive Officer of Crystal Dynamics.
Zelnick plans on growth to not only come from headcount, but by creating new IPs, such as this years hit, BioShock, and not focusing on licensed properties such as movies.
"From a specific point of view, what we find most compelling is building up our collection of our intellectual property. I'm not really interested in scale for scale's sake," Zelnick said.
Obviously, one of the big focuses for Take-Two is Grand Theft Auto IV, which its recent delay until next Spring will apparently allow for the game to even exceed its own high expectations.
"I believe this release, 'Grand Theft Auto IV,' is going to be vastly better than those expectations -- vastly better -- and that's hard to do when expectations are so high," stated Zelnick.
