ips made its stage debut at Microsoft’s press briefing a few days ago, but we got to see it in a more intimate setting a short while ago. While many of our questions got the old “We’d love to tell you but we can’t right now,” blockade, we did learn a few new things about the karaoke game.
The game will ship with 40 master tracks, with the actual music videos for each of those songs shown in the background during gameplay. In addition to Duffy’s “Mercy,” and Peter Bjorn and John’s “Young Folks,” we got wind of one other song that’ll be included on the disc: Young MC’s party fave “Bust a Move.”
Players will have the entire setlist available to them from the beginning—no unlocking required. There is some progression through the game, though, with singers earning ranks and badges as they perform well. After one performance, we got a badge for hitting the tambourine a lot (banging the touch-sensitive microphone) and got a rank upgrade from “Bathroom Dreamer” to “Sunday Soloist.” The rankings do have Achievements tied to them, but they’re mostly just for fun.
As far as the Zune and iPod support goes, we didn’t learn much more than what we saw during the stage presentation. We couldn’t get official confirmation, but we wouldn’t be surprised if user music was somehow tied into a lyrics database of one form or another.
The game will be bundled with two mics, black and white, and will retail for “a competitive price,” according to iNiS. Look for it this holiday season.
