| ARCADE STAR TREK? WHY NOT? |
hen I heard Bethesda was releasing what amounted to an arcade shooter with Star Trek ships, my inner Trekker started getting ornery. Now that I’ve played the budget-priced result, I think it’s amusing that I find myself recommending the game to fellow enthusiasts. Sure, it’s a little silly that the Enterprise is flinging itself around the galaxy taking out Klingon Birds of Prey to and fro, but there are some classic Trek moments to be had, from beaming off away teams to outrunning the shockwaves of exploding planets. Sadly, this is also an instance where you get what you pay for, and your 20 smackers is going to earn you some questionable controls, boring mission objectives (enough with the scanning for warp trails), and some piss-poor graphics to boot. It’s enough to warn away casual players, but more devoted fans will revel in all the Trek eras represented and even the game narration by the Shat himself. Set your expectations at a reasonable level, and there’s some fun to be found here.
